Kingdom Come 2x platinum are we going to call that a classic too?
Did that album have the cultural impact or hits that Views did? No
I’m not saying it’s purely determined by sales I’m saying there’s a degree to which an album represents some sort of cultural zeitgeist in the public consciousness that is important. Sales are necessary but insufficient when talking about this type of classic
There’s other types of classics tho peep my thread from last night.

How can a popular album like em's not be considered as cultural impact
Thread in desperate need of locking down
not until my gif on page one goes plat

Quality on its own does not determine a classic
I can’t point to like 10 90s Memphis tapes where everyone is rapping their ass off and the production is immaculate that no one on this site ever heard and I couldn’t reasonably call them classics even within their respective scene because they didn’t make a splash like that
Someone like Mach Hommy for example can make incredible music but it would be insane of anyone to declare any of his tapes “classic”

Hov, “greatest rapper alive”, returns from retirement

Grammy for RaotY
Hit singles
Was very much a cultural moment

Nobody said all you need is quality for a classic but you phrased it in a way which sounds like quality doesnt even matter lol
How can a popular album like em's not be considered as cultural impact
because the extent of the culture it affected was midwestern cigarette smoking dip chewing cookie monster sweatpants whites and gave them ammo to be angry at loved ones to and fantasize about murdering them
How can a popular album like em's not be considered as cultural impact
I’m not saying it had NO cultural impact but I’m saying it wasn’t representative of an entire year ad culture the way Views was. Again there’s a difference between being popular and having some sort of fundamental representation of a genre and pop cultural consciousness
Moral of the thread: Some of y'all really need to go outside, take a breath of fresh air and touch some grass. Why not get some hoes while you're at it too.

U say this as drake fanbase isnt mostly compromise of white people

Maybe I should have been more specific but what I’m saying is that quality on its own doesn’t make a classic, and something can be a classic without necessarily being great music
Again this is what the masses decide, whether that’s the broad masses or the particular audience of a given scene
I don’t even f*** with Views that heavy personally but it would be delusional of me to not consider it a classic
move to ye sxn

Im not talking about who it’s for Im talking bout the purpose of the music and why the reach isnt as relevant

How can something be deemed a classic if it isnt great music????????
Album is a mess but it's better than Yandhi would have been. JIK is a messy, rushed, and occasionally stupid album. Yandhi was generic, boring, and cringeworthy as f***. I will never understand the reverence people hold for that s***
