Especially after reading op I think Joe needs his own network. How he hasn't yet with the way he talks about the power of the creator and knowing your worth as a creator is honestly beyond me

    100% agree

He’s never gonna be ok with being under a corporate umbrella

So start your own s***! Don’t fish for a favorable contract from people who are never gonna give you the freedom you want. You have a huge dedicated platform - use it both for yourself and others

That being said I believe Joe is largely in the right here. Was he stubborn and asking for more than hes worth? Most likely. But the fact that he has remained one of the biggest podcasts on the network despite the acquisition of some of the biggest podcast networks on Earth is proof that Spotify should be giving him what he wants. They have overpaid multiple networks of podcasts but won’t overpay a small podcast that is generating massive return.

There’s a lot of intricacy and we don’t know the whole story but Budden represents a Black voice in a Black culture that has been dominated by white voices since the advent of the internet. He’s stubborn, he’s probably difficult to work with, he probably overvalues himself BUT I strongly believe that he should be supported and that he represents someone who is willing to turn down massive amounts of money in order to maintain freedom for himself and for others in the future and that alone is worth commending.

I highly recommend the episode linked above for hearing a take from Joe on this. There's really not a lot here at all that isn't covered in the podcast in some way.

I don't know how much Joe asked for but they definitely brought more revenue than they were given in the contract, more than Spotify anticipated. definitely deserved compensation. It also says a lot about Spotify that their idea of re-negotiation was "we'll give you a big bag for ownership in everything any of you do". They were trying to finesse them.

I remember a discussion kinda like this when they were discussing Drake being way underpaid for his Apple Music deal. Obviously the companies give a lot of front end money, but when you don't know what you're worth & how much you bring in, years down the road you can see that they can kinda get over on people.

    agree
Joe actually said they'd brought in 9 figures worth of value - seems hard to believe to me but if its even close to that then its absurd to not give them everything they were asking for

Like it's actually baffling asf. Joe trusts none of these labels or dsps yet he still plays these games with them.

Get Ak. Get Charlamagne. Get some sponsors and get poppin. Easier said than done but the options are obvious

    yup
this traditional media s*** like Pitchfork and Complex are dying
    theres an opportunity rn

and AK would make a lot of sense too. they dont need to have him on the podcast but make him part of the network since he brings in a whole different crowd

like one of the things I notice is Spotify and etc are paying for networks

they want a whole group of podcasts/media not just one piece of value

Joe should create a network and then if he wants to go corporate w it he'll have a massive amount more value

I dunno. Joe is too petty to just go to spotify again if he makes it out big with his own network. Joe pulling a Rogan after Rogan would be funny

  • Great write up. I was lost on the whole Joe Budden/Spotify fiasco

    yea exactly

it basically just ended up being a summary and hopefully its useful for people who dont listen often but theres really nothing here if you follow him at all and listened to that episode

the person who asked for it had listened but didnt understand so I hoped this might help
