Kendrick’s verse on like that was no different than what’s happening here

Drake was the first to bring up his wife’s name and hint he knows dark secrets

But tbf, I think everyone kinda expected that beef to go the way it went. They’ve hated each other for years

sean was one of the few mainstream acts that was always in his “real rap” bag

    Highly disagree

I don't think punchline Rap makes you "real rap" automatically

Besides Dark Sky and Detroit, most of his music is party, pop and frat rap minus a few outliers of the occasional song or feat - until the last few years of the 2020s

He is like just a tier above Travis, majority of the time

Never thought he was that good of a rapper but Dark Sky Paradise is a great album

Everything since his hiatus has been good tho. Detroit 2 was a pretty solid album and had me looking at him different

I think this cypher shows how good of a rapper he can be. Joey and Soul ain’t nothing to play with and he held up with them. I actually like his verse more than souls

I don't like any project of his as a whole besides Detroit 1 mixtape

But yeah his hiatus was until this decade, which I originally said to another user he was rarely in this bag till recent - especially on the more "extreme" side like a Soul or Joey

Nah his albums always had some songs that brought balance

And I give him some real rap points for doing a lot of different complex flows in addition to the punch lines.

Also I feel like saying “besides Dark Sky, Detroit, and the last few years” is doing a lot to make your point

And Sean always made it a point to get on tracks with other rappers and compete to have the best verse. He has a good handful of memorable collabs like that where he went off. That’s the real rap spirit. Sean is a real head

Nowhere near Drake and way more bubblegum, especially the 2010s

A single mixtape and a single is not a lot.

For every single cherry picked point I can bring up 5+ of his bubblegum pop usual style.

And on top of that he isn't even skilled.

There is a whole more taped and albums than just those 2.
Compete to have the best verse while still falling flat to most doesn't do much neither - same could be said about Cordae who is complete trash (although I do think Sean is better than him n more "authentic").

Sean is good at flows, that's it. And literally most of his discog is bubblegum. He was literally one of the major faces of frat and radio Rap and it's part of what he cries about "not being taken seriously" due to it all.

Y’all saying “I haven’t heard Joey rap this good since 1999”

He’s rapped this good on every project since

Ehhh I don’t really agree respectfully. His prime to me was 2012-2015.
I think this cypher verse was top tier but I found 2000 to be a cool 6/10 at best. I was underwhelmed by his rapping on that album.

Maybe I hold him to a higher standard though, considering this man gave us classics like Waves, Survival Tactics and Christ Conscious

Song has bars but the dozen Kendrick references and beat choice make it feel like NLU lite

His flow is crazy, rhyme schemes above average and bars/punchlines above average, he went bar for bar with the big 3 all on tracks. Best verse on looking for trouble

Him not getting taken serious and the how and why of that is beside the point. Even while doing that style he always showed he could rap with the best
