I really feel like Todd Philips did not want to make this movie. But with the first one being successful as it was, he took Warner Bros. money and said “fuck you.”

Joker: Folie à Deux has good ideas, and it has bad ones. I respect the ambition of making a sequel to a successful origin of the most famous supervillain a musical, but the execution just falls flat. Each number brought the story to a grinding halt. At the same time, the set design during some of the numbers was fantastic. The performances from Phoenix and Gaga were great, but what’s done with them in the story is not. The second half of the film transforms from an asylum picture to a courtroom drama. It really started to lose me until The Joker is fully unleashed, but that only lasts for a short while. And then… the ending. Yikes.

The mixed mess that this is leads me to believe that Todd Philips really didn’t know what he wanted to do with this movie, so he took the money and did it all. It rarely works, if at all. Don’t get me wrong there were parts of this that I was really into. Then I would be taken right back out. It truly just is an epilogue to the first one, which honestly should’ve just been left on its own as a standalone picture. Overall, just disappointing.
