Well considering that:
A. The first one opened to $96 million on a $60 million budget, ultimately went to make $1 billion worldwide
B. This one had a $200 million budget
C. Weekend grosses are only going down from here
It's bad
Bro, where did that 200 mil even go

Ngl y’all I might be jokerpilled
Feel like I need a 2nd viewing at least
Movie was gas for sure
Getting really tired of bots and children running film discourse
people like this is why i got out of film a bit

https://twitter.com/srirachachau/status/1842846745048354860I’m just gonna say it.
A lot of Joker hate feels like “baby’s first hot take”.
Like someone watched a couple Scorsese / Nolan films and needs to virtue signal about how much they understand real cinema.

reminds me of ralphthemoviemaker's weird ass video on it
don't get why these movies get people so worked up
Real, if true. Joaquin is clearly only interested in making something artistically satisfying to him. This movie is frustrating because there’s so much unrealized potential, but the ideas are interesting. I don’t understand how people can call it both a cash grab, and a movie designed to piss off the fans.

As a gaga fan since 2008, she has always hyped her projects after their release. This is her first one wher she hasnt said a word. I thnk it speaks volumes
my ass thought they was just being rough with him for talking s\*\*\*. Cause even earlier in the movie the same guard smacked upside the head for making a smartass comment. So I took it they were just beating him up while trying to get him in the showers to clean off the makeup. Didn’t hit me until I came into the thread :travsmh:
I think they kept it open ended so people could think one or the other

Yeah the whole raped the Joker out of him narrative seems a bit much still to me but I’ll take it for what it is lol
i didn’t even register that that was a rape scene until i came back to read the thread after, idk why. I should’ve put that together but i was just confused. yeah he was pantless, wtf. it felt so detached and so did the killing of the other inmate, like misplaced, or something
HE WAS RAPED?!
Am I the only one who don’t think he got raped ??
My brain just did not get that out of that scene and I was shocked to see it be the consensus as I read peoples thoughts after the film. I was like wait wtf?
To me it just looked like the guards beat him almost to death
Todd also said his friend being choked outside his sell after is what made him drop being joker and I feel like he would’ve mentioned the other thing if it did happen
It being a rape is definitely the consensus and will be solidified as the plot for people unless someone clears it up but I completely missed it. Maybe on second watch it’s obvious

I'm pretty sure that is not what happened. I think Twitter is completely misinterpreting that scene

Nah you’re right to think that
There’s nothing that inherently says he got raped but I think people hearing the guard say to remove his trousers (pants) implied that it happened. But really he just looks beaten badly after. I also find it strange people say the rape is what causes him to revert to Arthur when it’s actually the death of his friend/supporter that makes him turn sour to the idea of being an idol.

well somebody was quick to put that on the plot synopsis on wikipedia as well lol not that that means much early on
At the end of the day the one thing he wanted was to entertain people.
So that validation from being the joker he was trying to entertain through that, even though every time he tried to be funny it sounds like when Elon makes a ‘joke’
People wanted him to keep knocking off rich people, mostly, and express rage towards the establishment. But he wasn’t equipped to really give them what they wanted for the most part

i hope you're right and that it's not what happened. like you say, it makes more sense for him to walk back joker as fake after his friend dies. but i think it's easy for most viewers' brains to go there or connect dots
it's a tragically common occurrence in prisons of any kind. it could've been alluded to in dialogue with the 'buy me dinner first' line, and the joke about his mom's abusive boyfriend (who SA'd him).
and the fact when they lay him flat on the ground, the scene cuts on both men crouching to remove something on his lower half (which at that point is just his underwear).
it's upsetting to think they'd do this in poor taste, but i can't help thinking it's at least hinted at, especially when so many people left the theatre with that conclusion

for sure definitely an awful misstep to even have that be such a widely interpreted thing that happened.
i also think the
they raped the joker out of him!
thing is actually whats making me just flat out shut out the possibility that it took place. especially since we had the prisoner dying + gary on the stand scenes that clearly set up the arc without the need for rape
i think if it happened earlier i would buy it and it may even be less egregious but to have it where it is, if it happened, is ridiculous lmfao
