The bad thing is that people remember the Real Nega controversy so its not like its out of character. People are on edge with him & understandably so
music theft is a bad thing
(Sample snitching is also an issue tho)
Sample clearance seems to be hell for many acts & the rights owners can have really bad terms or be hard to track down or flat out refuse
I'd obviously be on the side of release it for free if you can't clear it, rather than get 'stung'
From what we can see he tried to clear it initially. He is under AWAL's professional tier (Sony subsidiary) so he has to follow industry rules/can't make commercial releases without doing business properly.
I'm not gonna hold this over him, in the same way that nobody on this website holds the Omega/New Slaves sample/ITAKY sample/Blame Game/Avril 14th sample (Aphex Twin/Drukqs) etc etc over Kanye. I can keep going if you'd like
if you pick & choose just because you hate/dislike an artist that's on you

so $2k fee, a nickel and some credits is too much for him? Lord knows that whole album going triple aluminum so that 20% prolly hurting

What happened with that song? That’s the only jpeg songs I ever f***ed with and I haven’t heard it since the year it came out

This is a case by case thing
“Who’s being sampled” and “Who’s the person sampling them” are super important details
Artists with the means of clearing samples should clear samples. Especially in scenarios like this where the band is insanely obscure and basically make nothing from their art
Travis actually just did this exact same thing on Jackboys 2
Also with jpegs track record, I don’t believe a single thing the dude says

I post this in every jpeg thread
He stole the beat from someone on YouTube, Lied in multiple interviews about how he came up with the beat then got on stage and told the original producer to kill himself for asking for credit

It doesn’t sound like it’s too much for him. More that he doesn’t like the narrative they’re running with lol
But it also seems like they had a prior agreement and they tried getting more of out of him? Not sure
