they just recently released a TV show about him
!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-Tm63y-S4sIve watched it. I love shows and movies set in those times.

Finally finished this masterpiece
I really took my time with this one. I started it Feb 25th and finished it today (April 15th).
Such a sad ending to his life. RIP Malcolm X.
so many times ive picked this up to start reading it and I always say, I'll read it later.
I'm like Lebron when he's on the first page of the book...

Lmaoo ngl i actually copped this back in July of 2020 and it took me to Feb 21 to start reading it
A big thing that put me off for so long was how small the pages and text are. It took some getting used to

Map Of Bones by James Rollins.
8/10
This might be a little bit biased but I love thrillers like this one, especially those shrouded in religious mysticism.
Anyways, the only reason im taking away a few points is because the amount of inescapable situations they escape is kinda bizarre lol.
The author recommends a few books at the end that helped him in writing this one,so I'm def checking them out too
Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro

brand new novel by Ishiguro but the first one I've read from him. this was a very unique and engaging character study about an AI robot in the near future caring for a girl and learning about humanity. it had a few interesting twists but its strength was its perspective and narration. still mulling over the ending and I think this book will stay with me for a while. definitely would recommend for anybody interested in the future complexities and ethics regarding human and AI relations. I'll make sure to check out more from Ishiguro soon.

Per your review picked up this book last Sunday and finished last night. Been having a lot of philosophical questions about consciousness and life after growing up religious and leaving that community. Something about the ending had me sobbing for like 20 minutes. Very enjoyable read.

definitely a powerful and accessible novel by Ishiguro. glad you enjoyed it and found some meaning in it.
that's what this thread/section is all about because I know I've read some amazing books recommended here

I really want to read this!
Just finished Ready Player One. Was a super fun and very addictive read. It got a bit boring at times when it went on describing the intricacies of the video games, but overall super fun and enjoyable plot and characters.

The Tunnel by Ernesto Sabato
not sure about a rating so I'm going to leave that out.
I liked it very much, tho I feel like the ending was supposed to be a bit more fleshed out.
Overall explored themes are very interesting tho,and was a quick read too, glad I picked it up.
Finished these all in the last week, sorry if the post is too long
The Jakarta Method by Vincent Bevins
This was a great read, covers the whole Third World/Non Aligned movement in history, American interventionism, and the threads that connect states in southeast asia to the ones in latin america. I picked up this book after watching "The Act of Killing" by Joshua Oppenheimer and found this gave a lot of context for the why and when rather than the how of genocide in Indonesia. One of my favorite books of this year (technically came out last year)

Sputnik Sweetheart by Haruki Murakami
This was ok. My 4th Murakami and probably the least memorable of them all, a week later and I don't really remember what this was about. Short read so you can finish it in a day or two

Females by Andrea Long Chu
This pocket book was like one continuous essay. Some interesting insights on what it means to be male vs. female (in the ontological sense, not the biological). Not really about gender in the way I feel most people use that term
Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy

I liked No Country for Old Men a lot but wasn't really feeling this one by McCarthy. whole story just seemed like a repetitive description of murder and genocide and there was only really one character I found interesting. plus McCarthy's prose can be a chore. one of those books where I finished it just to finish it
5/10

Bro I'm still 48% into the book, I meant to go back to it, but I haven't touched it since 2019 smh. Will see when I'm done with my current books, because I feel dirty DNFing books lol

yea I hate that feeling too but there are so many good books to read, why waste time on one you're not enjoying
sometimes the second half is a lot better and makes it worth it, but for Blood Meridian if you couldn't get into the first half you won't like the second half much either imo
Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri

first work I've read by Lahiri. this was a short story collection mostly about Indian immigrants moving to the states. I found some of the stories a bit too similar but I really liked Lahiri's prose and how she used metaphors and symbolism. favorite stories were the title story, Sexy, This Blessed House, and A Temporary Matter. I'll definitely check out more of her work, probably a novel, as these stories all left me wanting more.

going on a short story spree now, already have Hemingway, Borges, O'Connor, Saunders, Gaiman, and Ted Chiang lined up but lmk if y'all have any other recommendations

9.5/10
A virus wipes out all male mammals on earth except for one guy and his pet monkey. They travel around the world to find his gf and get him to a lab to study him.
Explores masculinity, isolation, love, suicidal ideation, prophecy, feminism, toxic femininity, terrorism and post-societal living. Like all BKV, its a post-apocalyptic / adventure story by nomenclature but it's really about its characters at heart. Ending made me cry. Don't think a book made me cry since elementary school.
F***ing monkeys man.
Ender’s Game
Super recommend this book to anyone. It pulls you through the story so smoothly that it feels like it shouldn’t be able to hold the depth that it does.
It uses a military sci-fi setting as a lens to view empathy and communication from all kinds of angles. It presents empathy at small, large, and galactic scales, in low and high stake situations, and from both cynical and optimistic perspectives.
Ultimately it makes a scary part of humanity feel like evidence of a deeper harmony we could reach with the universe and each other.
This is the kind of book I would recommend even to someone who doesn’t think they’d like it. If it sounds too childish or too nerdy to you, just put on the audiobook for 20 minutes. After that, you can stop it but I doubt you will.

The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne
classic/10
amazing,Im really a sucker for survival adventure books

I thought this is a really good read. Tons of details and new types of characters traits from people. Nice resolve and ending
It’s a murder mystery book. A boy goes into witness protection. Gets sent to a forest survival camp with other boys. Instructor is retired Air Force survivalist that eventually has to go above and beyond for this boy when things start to get uneasy when his location becomes known.
I’d recommend if you like murder mysteries.
Just found out they are making a movie of this with Angelina Jolie but I feel like they are changing some big details it’s rated R though so they’ll have some freedom
I’m was literally reading this book like damn this in movie would be fire and now look

Finally got around to reading this. It was undeniably gripping but tough to read at times. Yanagihara's prose is so nice and I want to read more like this. 9/10
more short story collections
Tenth of December by George Saunders

Another book of short stories by Saunders, who is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. This collection had some gems for sure, with my favorites being Escape from Spiderland, Victory Lap, and Tenth of December. some of the other stories I couldn't really get into, and I'm surprised to see this book be so heavily praised and considered Saunders' best work as I think both Pastoralia and CivilWarLand in Bad Decline were much better
7.5/10
Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang

Really enjoyed this one and it had some interesting concepts and good execution. Reminded me of Black Mirror in certain ways and it did a good job of fleshing out the science fiction parts and getting technical without getting too bogged down by the specifics. there were a few stories that I didn't like but Story of Your Life, Hell Is the Absence of God, Liking What You See: A Documentary, The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate, and The Lifecycle of Software Objects all really resonated with me and will stick with me for a while. definitely recommend for any fan of science fiction
8.5/10
edit: for some reason my version of the Chiang book had the first four stories from his 2019 book Exhalation

F***ing beautiful and breathtaking/10

Yeah fr, get on that. The prose is so inviting, flies by. Incredible plot, really layered characters, and a beautiful story
