read a good chunk of this so far after your rec, great stuff

I’m now reading another book of his called flash boys, it’s about how computers changed Wall Street and put it upside its head, it’s really interesting. I love how the author tells these interesting non fiction and even kind of educational things, but puts it in a kind of engaging and thrilling story. Real different from other non fiction books I’ve read.

first thing i've read since the summer, got through the whole thing in one sitting yesterday. probably the most i've ever laughed when reading something. for something published in 1949 i think the relatability of the humor n poignant moments holds up really well

    Norwegian Wood

This story goes relatively slow; it reads just as someone recounting their life; but it is dips into themes of confused adolescence, decay, love and broken relationships, hesitancy, unstable mental health and melancholy. A slow burner, but I feel like I just lived someones entire life, loved all of the people he loved, lived the lonely nights he lived; and experienced all of the feelings and emotions he felt.

With all Murakami books they are male-gazey, and the main character has s***with every main woman character; which unfortunately detracts from the main themes

Just finished the first book of mistborn by brandon sanderson. Anyone else into the series?

  • “Bone” by Fae Myenne Ng

This was an okay book. A real 6/10. Felt more like I was reading a journal rather a cohesive story. My biggest gripe has probably got to be the fact that each chapter feels like she’s upset/complaining about the same things. But she is able to paint quite the scene inside San Frans Chinatown. Prolly won’t go out of my way to read another one of her books.

    “Kitchen” Banana Yoshimoto

This was a fun book honestly, a real 8/10 for me. Nothing profound particularly happens but heavy on the emotional aspect of story telling. The first story was a bit 🤔, as I felt the relationship between Mikage and Yuichi felt not forced but just weird. Could have been because of the translation. The second novella was fire though, reminded me of Murakami's “Strange Library”, but more grounded.

My next read is going to be “Naked Lunch” by William S. Burroughs

Really enjoyed a lot of the humor in this. Very interesting deep dive into consumerism, culture, and death. Excited to see how the movie adapts this.

Havn’t posted in a few months. But here’s the books I’ve read since August

Andy Kaufman Wrestling with the American Dream

The man the myth the legend. A wonderful take on Kaufmans career and it’s parallels to the American Dream.

    10/10 - Theory, Philosophy, Art

    From Counter Culture to Cyberculture

A great history book regarding the military industrial complex and it’s impact on the world. The book then turns to focus on the designer/artist, Stewart Brand. If you want to know how we ended up where we’re at regarding the internet and the people who tried taking it back early on then this is your book. Also just good information on the history of technology in the last 80 years. Really don’t know how to rate it because like it’s history. It’s written well and not a slog to get through so that’s good.

    10/10 ? - History, Art, Culture

    White Noise
It’s not bad. I also feel like there’s something Delilo is holding back. I couldn’t help but feel that this book was being held back for the sake accessibility. But it is good and you should give it a shot. Fun & enjoyable but I definitely think it could have been stronger.

    7/10 Fiction

    Gravity’s Rainbow

Probably the greatest piece of fiction to grace this planet. Read it. Read it. Read it. Read it. It’s a book about love, life, history; pain, hope, everything. Pynchon might just be the goat. SAVE THE BANANA BREAKFAST

I can not give it a rating as I feel that is a disservice to the book. It’s amazing. Just read it - Fiction

Haruki Murakami - The Wind Up Bird Chronicle

    5/5

One of the best books I've ever read. Think it's my 4th Murakami (3rd fiction) and it was just stunning.
I finished it exactly one month ago, and it still lingers in my mind, it explores some thoughts that I've had myself, the well ahs become a big fascination.
A very very important book for me.

Peter Handke - Short Letter, Long Farewell

    2/5

I bought this on a whim because of the gorgeous cover and a synopsis that really intrigued me.
    That was a mistake.
Not sure if it was because of my own built up expectations, but this was very confusing.
Some really interesting concepts, and some really great moments ultimately ruined by meaningless writing.

Just finished Kafka on the Shore. Extremely moving. The book evoked such a unique feeling. It was the second Murakami book I’ve read and it won’t be the last.

Finished Wind Up Bird Chronicles a couple weeks ago. I liked it even more. Also super disturbing and seeped into my dreams. Hasn't left my mind since.

    “Animal Farm” by George Orwell

This is my first Orwell book and I’m thoroughly pleased. This was a solid 7/10 book. I do believe he was like right on the nose about everything. And each chapter was him just sitting on the nose, it was almost like a Pinocchio nose, but instead of lies it’s fascism. I want to read more of his stuff because he’s obvi written important things, but I’ll probably wait for a minute.

Next I’m reading “bones” by Fae Myenne Ng

I read this in two days and really didnt like it, but I'm too cynical

Very quick read yeah, what’d you dislike about it, it did feel disheartening reading each chapter after the cool pig left.

Stories from the Tenants Downstairs by Sidik Fofana

collection of short stories about characters who live in the same apartment complex in NYC and are slowly getting displaced. a decent critique of gentrification but I felt like the delivery of the message wasn't all that well done and the stories were forgettable

    6/10

All That Man Is by David Szalay

collection of short stories about men at different ages in their lives. very loosely connected, and I was hoping it would connect more, but Szalay's prose and storytelling were compelling. accurate examination of ordinary men, the memories they make, the challenges they face, and the shortcomings they share

    7.5/10

The Lord Of The Rings: The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien

took me two and a half months but I finally finished this series. ngl, the last one was a bit of a slog for me to get through. I was probably just burnt out on the characters and the issues I've had with the writing since the first novel. but not sure Tolkien stuck the landing like the movies did. seemed like the big climax just came and went and then there was a long denouement that took away from the main story a bit. still a very impressive work, but no more fantasy series for me for a while lol

    8/10
