This is one that I really enjoyed at the start before the protagonist moved back to her hometown. Think I DNFed @ 35%. Might try the show instead

Yeah I definitely would. It’s very long ( almost 1000 pages) but it really gives a very good and well researched account of everything. It’s written in an engaging style (compared to other historical biographies I’ve read at least) and very objective, even though Roberts isn’t afraid to call bull s***. It does get a bit tricky w names tho cus there are so many generals w similar names in it. If you want a full picture of not only Napoleons life and achievements but also want a good account of his personality this is definitely the book to go with.

    Two books for January.

The Remains of the Day – Kazuo Ishiguro (1989)

So so good, man. As stated by @beach_kneega – the novel sounds so bland in its overview: a butler recounting his work on a manor – but in actuality it’s a phenomenal piece of literature.

Ishiguro expertly uses the fastidious Stevens as an unreliable narrator from the first page, but you only begin to realise this mid-way through the novel as his anecdotes unravel.

Harrowingly sad and moving. The part that really got me most is that the novel is chronicled in days, and on day 4 the climax of the novel occurs. Stevens skips day 5 and concludes the novel on day 6 – undoubtedly spending the next day wallowing and lamenting on time wasted. All he can now do is proceed with “the remains of the day”.

    4.5/5

The Loved One – Evelyn Waugh (1948)

Dry, satirical, and snappy. It’s a little gem that deftly sets the differing cultures between British ex-pats and Americans in Hollywood, with a whole bunch of absurdity inbetween – a wannabe poet comes to Hollywood and ends up a pet mortician, only to then end up replacing the man he was training under.

    3/5

🔥 I need to start reading 1 book fully a week.

recently finished the diving bell and the butterfly one of the most gut wrenchingly vivid books i’ve ever read

absolutely heartbreaking, especially the scenes with his kids. its amazing some of the wit/usage of irony he’s able to retain throughout despite his so obviously horrible situation, really a testament to the human spirit. heartbreaking.

  • Billy Summers for this bookcircle I’m in. Great stuff if you’re looking for veteran being really good at his job type story.

The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov

getting to some Russian classics this year and this one was quite the enjoyable read. some of it like the references to Russian politics might've gone over my head but I loved the magical realism and humor throughout the story. the flashbacks didn't really work but I can see why this is a classic and definitely wanna read more Bulgakov now

    8.5/10

Hard Rain Falling by Don Carpenter

thread recommendation. was expecting a crime thriller but this was much deeper than that. almost reminded me of a seedier version of Stoner the way it chronicled basically a man's whole life. the prose and perspective made this special as it was gritty and bleak without being cliche or manipulative. story took unexpected turns and I breezed through this one in a few days. this novel is regarded as a hidden gem of the 60's and I can see why. definitely a powerful novel

    8.5/10
