due to eye suppression (because of alternating exotropia, as a result of convergence insufficiency)

explain this to me like im a big f***ing idiot

Convergence Insufficiency - Eye muscles used to converge (bring your eyes in/together towards your nose) are weak

My left eye muscles are weaker, probably because my right is more nearsighted and was used to taking over for nearby work

Exotropia - Eyes (one or both) drifting outwards, mine is extremely subtle and not noticeable

Suppression - As the eye muscles get lazier (if not treated as a child) your brain starts suppressing the neural signal from the eye that's drifting because it can't accept a double image

If you're unlucky, it gives up and you have a lazy eye that has much worse visual acuity

If you're lucky (like me) then your brain still utilizes the weaker eye but for other s*** (like looking left peripherally, etc.)

I was seeing in 3D when I was very young so I did develop binocular neurons during the critical period (these allow processing of 3D vision, if they aren't formed in this period then you can't see in 3D), I just need to get the eyes aligned properly

Only been looking out of one eye at a time for most of my adult life due to eye suppression (because of alternating intermittent exotropic strabismus, as a result of convergence insufficiency)

Basically my eyes are subtly misaligned (completely physically unnoticeable) so they don't work together

Getting prism glasses soon to temporarily correct the issue/provide relief but I have vision therapy lined up, which is proven to be highly effective

Didn't realize that I've been seeing the world wrong

    Ask me anything

EDIT: ALSO, forgot to add, I've been doing exercises on my own and I started seeing glimpses of 3D for nearby objects

The first one I saw was the tip of an opened banana

That s*** was so detailed and I could see all the grooves in it, was f***ing insane

I think my eyes started to do this recently when did you realize something was up?

Had experience with that, weirdly the difference between 2D and 3D isn't that noticeable, I've heard that seeing in 2D means you're not allowed to drive tho

I noticed I'll zone out watching something and my vision will occasionally unfocus and slowly slip into double vision. I'll have to consciously refocus my eyes. I was watching myself as it happened in the mirror once and I could see one of my eyes slipping slightly outward. I think it has to do with my glasses being a different prescription for each lens and one eye being stronger than the other

That’s nuts. Kinda cool how you’ll finally be able to see in 3D
