Tom was a goat at doing a big movie, and then a challenging art movie b2b but damn did eyes wide shut kill that drive in him
yea even i forget dude used to be a real actor with captivating performances. i mean i remember watching born on 4th of july in middle school or even watching magnolia when i was a child and being blown away by his work. but yea Kubrick had that man in the gulag for 2-3 years it was over.

the creation of Eyes Wide Shut was a nightmare, and took around 2 years of continuous shooting to make.
it was also just a generally emotionally demanding movie to make.
He never said anything in interviews but to my knowledge that was one of the last "Serious Art Films" he made I think the only other one was his appearance in Magnolia

Tom Cruise is so good, it's a shame. But I get it, it seems like he genuinely enjoys just making Mission Impossible and doing stunts.
Can't really blame him, but def a missed opportunity

Yeah that makes sense. I just don't understand why critics panned it - I'm assuming that had something to do with it knowing his ego

addendum to this: Theres a fan theory that Kubrick chose to put the sequence in with the frat guys harrassing him just to f*** with him.
But I don't really believe it since it was just straight up in the book

Definitely. Must've really sucked to put that much time and energy into what was at the time "The only bad Kubrick Movie"
Personally its in my top 5 I think that s***s a masterpiece.
All Crowe's films are great

I wonder if he's even aware of the critical reevaluation ?
