I do kind of get what @mangotflu is saying though. Whenever I host a party or play music for a lot of people who’s tastes I may not really know, I definitely stick to 2000s/2010s classics on the playlist. Most songs today don’t hit on the population level in the same way as those did. You could throw on Hotline Bling, for example, and everybody is instantly vibing with it. Can’t say the same for Jimmy Cooks or even Toosie Slide.
Totally different type of track tho + Hotline Bling was a huge track compared to those 2
Also the age factor. The people you party w prob around the same age as yourself. People usually stay stuck in their teenage years musically

Yeah it was much bigger but that’s the point. There’s not many huge tracks like that anymore. I would say Blinding Lights is probably the closest real mega hit in recent times that everyone knows.
The age factor is a thing but Ive noticed outside of actual current teenagers (don’t hang out with any) tastes are similar in people of “party age”

yeah most people are casual fans of music tho, they aren't going deep to find the current underground artists. they're listening to whoever tiktok/radio etc is feeding them

Yeah I worded it badly honestly
i was even talking about songs like Sicko Mode, that's 4 years old now & still gets played everywhere. I was just tryna say there's less of these songs that everyone enjoys now
This the first time I’ve seen someone consider listening to music mainly as a social thing
Facts
thats a new one for me. Like why are you on a music forum if you not even a music fan fr 😭

Nah it’s the group of people you hang around lol. There’s plenty of songs that’s popping off that people enjoy. You just want your pop hits.
Put on Freestyle or on me and people still go crazy over it. It’s the same with so many other rappers. Y’all just be hanging around dweebs that rely on radio hits cause y’all not music fans fr.

i don't get why these niggas be conflating their personal experiences wit the world at large
niggas will fr really sit here and tell you that "X artist isnt that popular or big" because they havent heard their music coming out of a car on their musty ass block

freestyle is almost 5 years old
on me is almost 2 years old
I was entirely talking about music released in the last year or 2, not old s***. There's plenty of huge songs from back in like 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 etc. It's just been a bit dead since 2021 ish

They be in their own little world and refuse to see the bigger picture. Mans mentioned HLB
like yeah in certain spaces that would rock, but in most places that also wouldn’t rock anymore.

It’s a difference though between personal friend groups and big social events full of friend’s friends, acquaintances etc

it's funny since you guys are using your personal experiences to try prove me wrong when I'm looking at streams/sales of songs, which shows you're wrong
what's the 3 biggest rap hits this year? First Class, Pushing P and N95? lol

I stopped caring about peoples taste when I host stuff. Last time I had white people over and they called me racist because I put on Weezer for them.
So now I just play whatever I want. It’s usually Reggaeton or Mexican music.

You take 100 random people off the street of a big city and put them in a room, Hotline Bling hitting way harder than Freestyle 99.9% of the time.

And that’s just off the top of the dome for 2021 and that’s just some of the most mainstream friendly tracks. If you think it’s been dry, that’s a you issue lol.

my nigga the point is you shouldn't be basing your f***ing tastes and enjoying s*** more on the basis as to whether or not it's socially acceptable or you can listen to it with more people

If you made a list for 2019-2021 too you'd see what I mean
also interesting almost all those songs are from 2021, barely anything from this year at all
