Not speaking to whether or not certain artists do or don’t have a cult fanbase, but when they do have one, it’s usually a result of when an artist fervently represents an ideal of a specific demographic. Artists - and their teams - can achieve this through lyrics, production, music videos, photo shoots, interviews, influences, performances and fashion and looks. Ye and Taylor Swift are two great modern examples of crossover megastars with cult fanbases. Throughout the years, fans and the public have witnessed their worldview, values and tastes through every crevice of media, with the constant being the ideal they represent

A surprise dance album which also scored 3 top 10 debuts and a #1 hit.
Maybe read the post I'm replying too. Clearly his fans aren't obsessed with EVERY release if 70% of them avoided the project/looped only Jimmy Cooks lol. And HNVM is my most streamed Drake album.

that's not really what that means tho. the same fans ran to it but hnvm has fewer tracks than a normal album so it didn't get as much streams. it also wasn't as replayable to get those streams
This 100%. Drake does not have a large stan following, and there’s nothing wrong with that because he has a bigger audience than damn near anybody
If he doesn't have a large stan following why do his interviews get way more views than any other artists interviews? What's the excuse for this one. They're even a lot more popular than Kanye's

There’s plenty of reasons that explain this, none of them being his fanbase being cult-like.
I feel like you’re misinterpreting what we mean

The only way it makes sense is if you believe a "stan" and a "cult member" are 2 different things right? but you seem to be conflating them which is confusing
Eh I guess that's where I disagree. If you're listening to everything an artist drops as soon as it comes out you're definitely not just a "fan" to me. You're at a minimum fairly hardcore & if you're doing it consistently for years you're a stan
Drake's one of the biggest artists out because he has so many people that're so excited for everything he drops, people that in my eyes are stans. There's a very short list of artists that get crazy hype for everything they drop and that's for a reason
What people in here are saying is that Drake has plenty of casuals on lock, because he's one of the biggest artists in the world. But a lot of them aren't stans or part of a core, loyal fanbase. They'll listen to the music and attend a performance because of it, but they won't necessarily buy anything he releases just because his name is attached to it or try to game the system to get him a #1 like Taylor, BTS, Beyonce, Nicki etc stans do
"Your sister is pressin' play
Your trainer is pressin' play
Your wifey, your wifey, your wifey, your wifey"
We saw it with the CLB cover memes, everybody putting Champagne Poetry on their IG stories, people clowning HNVM saying Drake made an album for the gays. We'll see it again with For All the Dogs. A Drake release is like a moment that everybody participates in because he's so huge and they want to be included. But they're not hardcore stans, a lot of them probably wouldn't even call themselves a fan. It's just pretty much everybody listens to Drake
i think one example of cult like could be vmas tbh. Those are fan voted awards (nominations arnt but the winner is)

@mangotflu this sums it up to me. If Drake had bigger stan base he would've won at least one of the past 5 years.

That's what I'm disagreeing with tho, you don't have casuals on lock because you're the biggest artist in the world. You're the biggest artist in the world because you have the casuals on lock
Look at Post Malone for proof of that, he had them on lock in 2018 then they all disappeared 2-3 years later, cause they weren't turned into loyal fans like Drake has turned his into
The only way it makes sense is if you believe a "stan" and a "cult member" are 2 different things right? but you seem to be conflating them which is confusing
Not really. “Stan” is just another way of describing a cult-like fan. Drake doesn’t really have a large stan following. He just has more fans than anybody else.

Perfectly summed up.

Post Malone declined for numerous reasons, but he’s still pushing 115K first week with his past two albums. That’s very respectable in today’s climate.

I believe there's just different types of stans, there's the type that're obsessed with the music/artist and love from afar & then there's the type that're just completely obsessed with all the terminally online stuff.
Drake's audience is full of the people that love from afar, Carti/BTS etc fanbases are full of the crazies
Beyonce's stans are also similar to Drake's whilst Nicki's etc are completely opposite

id say he has a mix of both atp tbf.

He definitely has stans, I’m just saying that his fanbase isn’t dominated by them like it is for a Travis or Nicki or Taylor

You might only see it this way because of how respected Beyoncé is compared to artists who usually have cult fanbases, cause the Beyhive is the posterchild for fanbases that are “full of crazies” to most people

Oh yea for sure. Beyhive in general have quieten down a lot in the last few years tho I think. Or other fanbases have just got crazier to make them look normal lol

Thats what I could call fans. They are more than just casuals and general public but not gonna go to that next level of support.
to me theres 4 general groups: stans, fans, casual listeners, and GP.
gp is people who listen to many artists and genres who would mainly play hits.
Casual listeners will check for new releases
fans constantly listen and support the artist
stans is next level to where they are constantly defending what the artist does, mass buying, buying crap just to have it, doing the most, run fanpages, etc.
For concerts any of the 4 groups could be going to a concert its like a football game some people just go to go while otherss shows up in team attire with face paint then others fight people who are fans of the opposing team.

i think beyhive kinda simmered down and they got older. But they were blueprint of craziness.

Yeah that makes sense but in that case fans would buy merch right? Especially if they're dropping $300 on concert tix like its nothing, you've gotta be a pretty huge fan to spend $300 on a concert ticket
I have a really hard time imagining that Drake can sell 1million concert tickets at $300 each but would struggle selling more than 100k FATD tshirts at $40 each
especially when you bare in mind that Post Malone sold over 100k of these bundles in 2018 lmao, hideous

“Heart of Butterfly 🦋 “ coming soon…

i think Drake could sell merch if its quality but i dont think he could pull off the 5 different covers for example.

Exactly and Drake isn't nowhere near having a cult fanbase
