UH OH
Salute to Kendrick. He deserves this moment. Culmination on one of the strongest years in hip hop history. Doesn’t hurt that it’s top 3 in his discography imo
Y’all are NOT having a multi page debate on albums vs mixtapes on November 30th 2024. Certainly not
Look at the top ten albums with the highest streaming weeks—the average track count is 23
Coincidence?

This has been explained to that poster numerous times already and he keeps refusing to accept it
I'm so glad this GNX album finally made them stop coping about Mr. Morale and admit that it was mid/a commercial disappointment lmao. See how easy that was?
It's insane how they try to rewrite history
Anybody can go back in the thread and see that people were actually saying this in 2022 and Drake stans were spamming Pepe copium memes
Anybody with 2 working ears can tell you why an album with songs like We Cry Together, Mother I Sober, Aunties Diaries, Crown etc was a commercial disappointment. But certain people weren't willing to take the broader context into account until their favorite rapper flopped a few months later and suddenly it was "Dance album", "Surprise release"

lol I just don’t see how you could argue that track count doesn’t correlate strongly to total streams at this point

I'm firmly in the Mr Morale is a disappointing album camp. Got into arguments on here so many times because I just don't think it's a good album. But I really can't stand how disingenuous OP and the clique of Drake stans in here can be. It's all in this thread, how can you boldly lie when anyone can just go back and prove you wrong
"you fell off like the simpsons"

obviously, Spotify is colluding with Kendrick to beat the bot allegations
Even for someone like Joe Schmoe, the extra tracks matter. Over time, a longer album can lead to more ‘sticky’ songs that get saved to playlists or replayed outside of those 45 minutes
That cumulative effect across millions of listeners adds up, even if individual habits don’t change dramatically. So, while habits might feel inelastic, the way music is consumed is often more dynamic
More “sticky” songs is completely hypothetical though. Not all of the 12 tracks off GNX are “sticky”. But what if those 12 that got chosen to make the album were the “stickiest” of the bunch. I think it’s more reasonable to assume that the quality is going to go down with each additional song rather than Kendrick left some hit songs off the album. I don’t think four filler tracks would’ve made much of a difference.

I thought Kendrick had no quotables?
An album is a collection of audio recordings, such as songs, that can be available on a CD, record, or digitally
So, enlighten me. How tf is a mixtape not an album when it is quite literally the exact same definition.
Literally both are a collection of songs put together online digitally or physically in the form of cd or tape. The differences are all just technical.
But enlighten me, guy with all knowledge on music, why aren’t mixtapes albums.
One is a cohesive well thought out collection of songs with a theme involved, the other is songs thrown together that don't meet the quality or just random loosies.
You know the difference between Dedication 2 and Carter 2?

Their excuse for Drake’s next flop will be “UMG sabotaged the release”

just a matter of time before the boy exposes it all

What’s the cohesive well thought out theme of Tha Carter 2
I mean duh after he beefed w the biggest music artist in the world and the one who revived his career quick no s*** it was expected to drop these numbers bro and break records come on now
"revived his career quick"
Good Lord, they trying to act like Drake did Kendrick's career a favor because he has a history of being creepy around young girls
Niggas keep bringing up The Off-Season but GNX passed the total streams of Cole’s new drop in literally 7 days
fatd had 11 more tracks btw
This stat shows alot.. with the extra full day it would have basically surpassed it 💀💀 but it probanly cleared on AM
But again, it just comes at the expense of songs that are already on the album. Unless the algorithm is going to push the same person 13+ different songs from a single album (has never been my experience), the extra tracks don't necessarily increase the amount that songs from the album are being pushed.
I also don't agree that more songs would mean increased chances of someone discovering the album that would have otherwise been unaware. Anyone in the US that listens to rap enough to get Kendrick Lamar songs recommended to them is going to be aware of the album.
Basically my entire argument hinges on my belief that listening habits are largely inelastic. Joe Schmoe has a 45 minutes commute where he listens to Spotify. A new Kendrick album releases so today he's listening to that. Yesterday it may have been a podcast. But the 45 minutes is 45 minutes. It's the same amount of time yesterday, today, and tomorrow. The length of an album doesn't change how long he's listening to Spotify. And I believe that that type of consumption makes up the vast majority of time spent listening to Spotify.

The difference is non-existent these days and basically whatever the artist decides to call it. Artists are surprise releasing albums with no promo or making mixtapes with concepts/themes or that are "good enough" to be considered albums
The Off Season was supposed to be a mixtape, kinda feels like a mixtape. Cole decided to call it an album so it's an album. HNVM and GNX are albums that released with no promo. It's just whatever the artist decides to call it. And it doesn't really make a difference with sales. It's not like people would've said "Oh, GNX is a mixtape? I'm not listening then"
GNX doing 324k is actually pretty crazy when you consider MMBS did 295k with 50% more songs. while i know streaming rules and stuff changed, MMBS only did 50k more than GKMC. GNX and TPAB basically have the same first week sales. not hate but objectively speaking MMBS really did underperform especially given how insanely well DAMN did (603k - which is nuts)
Niggas keep bringing up The Off-Season but GNX passed the total streams of Cole’s new drop in literally 7 days
We don’t measure Cole’s popularity by his latest release bro
That kind of treatment is reserved solely for Kendrick
