Facts I’ve been saying this for years. Streams and sales are two separate metrics and should be tracked as such. Converting streams into sales units never made sense and never will make any sense.
Even in the film and TV world they don’t do that. When a new film or show drops on streaming, they just report how many viewers or minutes watched it received, they don’t try converting the s*** into box office figures
Films/tvshows aren't competing against each other on a "leaderboard" though
they had to do it for music because 2016-2020 especially a lot of artists were still doing a huge % of pures still, so they would have been massively d***ed
no one would care about a pure Billboard 200 anymore either, so a lot of artists would be so f***ed over
Ok and regardless what past pop artist had a fanbase that was still THAT big to make those numbers that late into their career
taylor's case was/is quite fortunate though, there was a lot of things that fell in her favor.
One of the biggest things was the lack of competition she had, look at how around 2018-2022 ish there was a severe lack of active women in music that either didn't care about being celebrities or barely dropped music
Ariana was quiet & dealing with all her s*** whilst dropping maybe 12 tracks every 2 years
Selena was gone
Billie was quiet & dropping 12 tracks every 2-3 years
Rihanna was gone
the competition was so trash & women always love a celebrity in music and no one was trying to be that. Taylor came out from being kinda quiet & completely took advantage of that
I bet over the next 5 years, Taylor is nowhere near as successful, because she actually has a lot of competition now. You already see this with TTPD's longterm numbers, it really has flopped longterm. She'll still do monster FWs with new projects though obviously
People seem to constantly downplay SOS's success by being like "yeah its 42 tracks of course its doing those numbers"
meanwhile TTPD hads only sold 332k copies this year, when it's like 2 years newer than SOS. TTPD is 31 tracks
If SOS's success is cause of the tracks, TTPD must be a big flop

SOS was already eligible for 6x platinum before they tacked lana on to it, i also hate the idea of throwing a whole new album onto the end of an old album to inflate longevity but we can’t pretend like SOS wasn’t already wildly successful.
This explains so much.
I mean, I'll be the first to say that for first 2 years, SOS performed really well commercially off only 23 songs so it did really well in that regard. Adding 19 more tracks to the album has definitely helped it remain in the top 10 for the last 4 months, though.

19 more tracks is OD ngl lmao
300k carti congrats!!!!

Yeah, that's a whole other album. It wasn't a smart move not dropping the new songs as a new album imo.
these albums are the four horsemen of the deluxe edition apocalypse, every tactic you see now can be traced back to them…
2019: nav drops an 8-track deluxe in the middle of the tracking week to secure the #1 spot for his album bad habits
2020: a week after eternal stake is released, lil uzi adds a completely new 14-track album, with an entirely different title to it as a “deluxe”. earning a massive 349 million US streams and helping to keep EA #1 on the bb200 with 247k units.
2021: morgan wallen releases a bloated, 30 track album. amassing 240 US million streams, the largest for any country album at the time, and debuting #1 on the bb200.
2022: taylor swift releases not one, but two different deluxe editions of her album midnights, helping it earn the biggest first week debut on the bb200 in a decade and 549 million US streams. she would go one to release two more deluxe editions in 2023.
W Carti
Yoo tecca got one! That’s 🔥🔥🔥

Let's talk about The Weeknd and 100+ unique bundles for After Hours
I think Luther is going to become bigger than Not Like Us…
For how long Luther's been at number one i have yet to hear it outside anywhere, other than the superbowl halftime meddley

Ehh, films are definitely competing to be #1 at the box office every weekend. There’s a reason why huge tentpole films usually don’t release on the same day
HOLY F*** GAGA!

That has nothing to do with what he’s talking about lmao
That’s the Bundle Gimmick, he was talking about the Deluxe Gimmick
