I think Mr. Morale suffered from too long a gestation period. Kendrick doesn't usually take too long to finish projects. People forget that we got Overly Dedicated, Section.80 and GKMC from 2010-2012. He started cooking up TPAB in 2014 and was done by early 2015. DAMN was finished within a year and he did the Black Panther soundtrack within a few months.

He simply missed the mark with Mr. Morale. It wasn't that he was exploring topics and themes on that album that were too complex for casual listeners to grasp, especially not his own fans. He just so happened to come away with songs that weren't compelling enough and people dismissed the album and went back to supporting GKMC/DAMN.

Exponentially more radio support.

Basically, this. There weren't enough records on the album for fans to keep coming back to it and "records" in this instance doesn't even have to mean radio-friendly songs. Just songs well-structured and compelling enough for fans to keep revisiting.
