Extremely big W for Leon Thomas

This is why people are saying “only” 200K. She pulled out all the stops imaginable PLUS she did in-store album signings every single day of the release week to boost sales, and STILL failed to even match the performance of her debut album. It’s a massive flop on every single level.
Anyone thinking 200K is a good number under these circumstances is severely misinformed
Well yeah my post said "I don't be watching it like that" so it's less being misinformed and more simply not paying as much attention. I knew there were variants, but not the amount and how that compares to other artists of similar stature and the way they package and sell their records these days. An in-store album signing in 2025 is for fun at this point lmao don't know how much that's affecting sales, I just saw Mariah doing one too. Just old school, on the ground tactics
I just said what I said cause I personally can't think of many artists off the top of my head who are matching or exceeding their sales figures from 7 years ago / cracking 200k. Despite whatever promotional tactics seem excessive or what not. But maybe things are on an upswing sales wise compared to how they were a few years ago and I've missed that turn.

Kendrick had the biggest moment in rap history
and only saw a 24k (~ 36M streams) improvement to his sales from Mr. Morale
s*** is down everywhere bro

With the additional context added though, it makes sense.
GNX was a surprise drop that released 12 hours into the tracking week and had only 12 songs.
Mr. Morale was announced weeks in advance, released right at midnight, and had 18 songs.
So in a vacuum, a difference of 36M may seem small but with the additional context of the two albums provided, it was actually a much bigger increase that in seemed on paper

12 hours into the tracking with the entire world anticipating your next move and off the heels of a Super Bowl announcement with 2 #1 records?
ima just say s*** is down and it woulda been the same even if it was planned release

That still makes a difference though. Releasing at an abnormal time in the tracking week affects your overall number no matter who you are. If Taylor dropped TTPD on a Sunday, it doesn’t even come close to 2.6M first week

but it woulda still done 2M
lets be forreal lol
s*** is down across the board

A difference of 600K doesn’t mean anything?
Yeah s*** is down across the board nobody is denying that.
But Cardi employed every tactic in the book times then and failed to even match her last album. That’s horrible. It’s not like IAP did 800K first week. 250K isn’t some unobtainable figure to reach in 2025
Bad Bunny probably won't get the Superbowl bump Kendrick got witch charting but looking like he will be most streamed artist in a year or two.
What a run
it wont but thats because BB songs really dont fall out of rotation for a lot of people
Like im from Spain and i see it and i imagine in Latam it must be the same from what i have talked with people.
Niggas still playing songs from YHLGQMD, UVST, X100pre, before the albums era... daily

AM I THE DRAMA? was issued on:
Tough s*** tbh
Cardi did this to herself though idk why she took a Frank Ocean hiatus after a heavily industry backed major label album lol
Not too many artists have the juice to not release music for a long time and maintain a base (especially with ONE album), she’s fortunate she mustered 200k honestly
say what you want about cardi, but 200k is a decent first week number considering the circumstances. it's just funny because she clearly wanted to outsell nicki and pulled every gimmick in the book to do so, and still failed.
thug, on the other hand, might struggle to do 50k with his comeback album. that's terrible for him and a bad look for hip-hop considering how desperately it has needed another event album.
200k isn't bad for the current conditions of the music industry. Those numbers are only getting clowned because Cardi left no stone unturned and pulled every tactic and gimmick in the book to get the highest debut possible (and it's clear she wanted to outdo Nicki's last album). She pulled all the stops and still came short of matching the numbers from Nicki's last album and that's why she's being clowned.
Outside of that, her numbers are good.
MUTT TOP 10 :
Oh wow, I hope Mutt reaches the top 10. It deserves it. And wow, another top 10 debut for Tate McRae. Good to see her establish herself as a main pop girlie. Another W for Canada.

Context & Nuance!
200k in this era isnt even bad? Nicki got 228k
I’m begging y’all to use context man
Do YALL think (cause I do) we’ll see another 21 type album? And I mean a Godfather in 1971 type thing where it’s simultaneously the most acclaimed work in its medium across the board - critics, industry/academy, audience acclaim - and quickly one of the most popular works in its medium ever, not just the biggest of the year

Critically acclaimed - probably
Popularity wise - most likely not
With streaming & real-time album performance tracking, it’s extremely hard nowadays for something new to statistically outperform something that came before it without the passage of time.
That’s why when you have a song like Not Like Us which is clearly the most popular rap song of the decade, you have people on here who still claim it’s The Box because, on paper, the numbers for that song are stronger because it’s been out for longer
Remind you she went on twitter last year and said she’s gonna outsell Nicki lmao

they should’ve just bought as much sales as they could at that point lol
if that was the whole goal just buy the s***

I mean.....After Hours by Abel kinda checks off all those boxes.

After Hours comes the closest to fitting that profile in the modern age though.
