After More Life dropped and did its thing in 2017, why was there an air of “Drake disappeared” and “where is Drake” coming into 2018? Y’all remember that?

I remember that being a thing for a little while I can’t be the only one who noticed that

I remember it like it was yesterday lol.

He was only good like 6 months but I guess people are used to him being a constant presence.

He posted a pic in a dark room and had Take Care 2 trending around this time IIRC. There was a ton of hype for “The Summary” going into 2018.
In the midst of all of this people were wondering if his run was over cause Signs didn’t perform that well. It was crazy in retrospect.

i think beyond stale, the weeknd just oversaturated himself. ppl were still listening to AH, and that did so well for a number of reasons. he also hopped on a million features between the two also.

I don't believe that oversaturation is a thing tbh. Especially in the streaming era. While it's definitely possible for people to get sick of hearing/seeing you everywhere, I've always believed that if people connect with the music, you'll be okay and sometimes, that's tied to the perceived quality of music you drop. If overstauration was a thing, Drake shouldn't still be as popular/successful as he is because he's never gone anywhere in 13 straight years. Same could be said for Future and his run from like 2012 till now. Even Justin Bieber. Didn't drop an album from 2016-2019 but he's been on a run since 2009 with singles/features and he's smashed every single year and is still doing so today. He's already dropped 2 albums this decade and is getting ready to drop his third album in 3 years.

The difference between music that performs well and music that doesn't is the amount of people who connect to the music. That's all.

i dont necessarily disagree, just dont thinks its as easy as labeling it with one single reason such as a stale sound. Kendrick's new sound was not stale. you can say J cole's was, he still sold relatively well. same goes with idk Adele or T Swift. there sound aint really changing like that, but they still selling, maybe cause they are exceptions to the rule, and someone like the weekend is not.

Sure. I'm not saying the sound is stale necessarily.

But I think at style loses its ability to make a hit. Like if someone made a BL type song today, I don't think it would be a hit.

I think Taylor does a lot of different types of Pop music. And if Adele makes another album like 30, I don't think it does well at all.

The only reason Drake is disrespected so much now is cause he hasn’t really fallen back yet. Once he does he’s gonna be embraced more, like Wayne.

If he had people acting up like that over a 6 month break, you have to wonder what things would be like if he took a couple years off

"quality is subjective" is a euphemism for "i dont know how to articulate my feelings about music, i need something or someone to do them for me"

    dont even bother lmao

Thats literally the opposite. Quality being subjective literally means everyone has unique opinions regarding music

  • bigbelts

Is. Gunna. More. Popular. Than. The weeknd. Now. That. He. Outsold. Him.

The difference between one of them is 2K
The difference between the other one is 465K

If you can't tell the difference then I don't know what to tell you.

I agree and sometimes I want him to take a break but other times, I'm glad he doesn't. He knows he's on a historic run and it really makes no sense stopping for anything unless he absolutely has to and he's said several times that he doesn't like to take a break. I feel like he might retire at the end of this decade, though. Probably wants to give this music thing a good 20 years and then dip.

CLB having a better chart run than Scorpion so far is something I definitely didn't see coming.

    CLB (first 38 weeks):
    1-1-1-2-2-1-2-1-2-3-5-3-4-7-9-18-11-6-8-8-7-7-7-4-7-6-8-9-8-7-8-6-6-7-9-10-11-11
(5 weeks at #1, 34 weeks in the top 10)

    Scorpion (first 38 weeks):
    1-1-1-1-1-2-3-4-3-3-5-4-5-8-6-7-7-5-9-8-8-11-10-9-14-6-8-11-8-8-11-14-12-9-7-12-10-10
(5 weeks at #1, 31 weeks in the top 10)

2018 was a way stronger year

Ultimately all the hate is drowned out by the praise but it would be nice if people were more honest with how they feel about popular music in general.

Just realized a while back that the caliber of music Drake puts out at the rate he does it at just doesn’t match up with the slander he gets online. People talk about appreciating artists more while they’re active but you can literally look at old YT comments and forums from the 2000s and see the same hate directed toward Wayne and other legends of that era. It’s annoying more than anything

In terms of hits? Sure. But CLB is having a better chart performance than Scorpion without any of those hits. That's noteworthy to me.

The fact that people ever hated on Wayne to seem like they listened to “real music” or to seem like rap nerds is just wild to me

Cause now he’s one of the artists that so-called music enthusiasts praise the most. Crazy how that s*** works

It's unfortunate but it's human behavior to begin to take a reliable level of excellence/consistency from someone for granted after getting used to it. Applies to all facets of life, not just music. The person you take for granted the most in your life is probably the one who shows up for you the most.

that's why i be sitting back and not even defend bro anymore, his legacy and what he's done all speaks for itself

At this point it's hard to even understand how he's doing this. I could do a career break down up to 2019 but this is just wild.

All of the albums that dropped after Scorpion in 2018 spent a single week in #1 with the exception of Astroworld which spent 2 weeks at #1 & A Star Is Born soundtrack spent 3 weeks at #1 and to make up for that, it had 3 monster hits. CLB didn't have that.
