it all goes back to what pac said on mortal man fr
Idk if anyone else had this interpretation of the album, but compared to previous projects of his it felt remarkably lacking in religious themes. Maybe it’s my own agnosticism coloring this, but it felt to me like there’s a layer of “God is dead, therefore we’re our own saviors” in the message. The biggest a***og is the line about 2Pac, obviously, but compared to DAMN’s perspective on religion and even the Heart Part 5 it felt remarkably secular and almost dejected in its lack of faith
And that to me colors the disappointment OP mentions. What’s the point of breaking your back for an ungrateful society if there’s no god to reward you? If your mission on earth for societal change has “failed”, why not focus on your family?
I don't even know if it's a rejection of religion as much as Kendrick's personal reframing of his relationship with religion. I think him being put in a lot of people's views as a a messiah type figure kinda disillusioned him because he realizes the weight people put on God and how a lot of people don't really love God they just want someone to save them. I think both in his personal life as the one in the hood who "made it" and his relationship with the world as the "pro-black rapper" it can become apparent that a lot of people are only concerned with being surface level followers to benefit themselves. lots of these woke niggas aren't rly down for any cause at all

you think he's just gotten too old to fight?
laughed at the post and then laughed even harder when I saw it was cookies!
!https://youtu.be/K0IGlJJ3x8EIs it funny to you to tear down a black man with different views than you? Call him crazy. Tell him his experience and what he should think?

man i never said all that I just said chill

you pretend to be both a man and a woman on here
either way you still a b****
there's truth to it but it stops when we're dealing with societal issues
also this feels like what jordan peterson peddled years ago
"keep your room clean!"
or what voltaire said centuries ago about taking care of your own garden
in the end, you're left with a nice backyard and house but society is still a capitalist mess which means you're gonna have to worry about those less fortunate than you, or anyone trying to take away your nice garden and house, congrats you're probably a republican now
buddhism and other philosophies surely have good takes on how to improve yourself/environnement, look there
idk why we keep falling for this bs (take care of yourself and nothing else will matter), it's a lie
I think this is taking the message to a binary that I am not hearing in the text. But I understand the sentiment.
you pretend to be both a man and a woman on here

what does "pretending to be a man and woman" mean
damn it took me like 45 mins to read half of that
Taking a lil break then read the rest

I don’t pretend anything y’all call me whatever gender you feel at the moment because of my thoughts (which is sexist but ok) I don’t have to clarify anything to you.
you think he's just gotten too old to fight?
i think its partially that and how much the world has changed in the last few years
just listening to this album a couple times and even his prior albums kendricks been dropping hints of how all this pressure has been weighing on him and i think him gaining a family also adds to that as well.
"shits on my mind and its heavy"
i think thats why FEEL is one of my favorite kendrick songs he really lays all the s*** out on that one
true social change has never been achieved through lawmaking and deliberation
no matter how many arbitrary slogans or laws are passed by the federal govt as long as white people hold economic and social power the black man will be oppressed thats how the system is designed to work
desegregation didn't lead to social change? allowing Black people to vote didnt lead to social change? I agree that visibility is overrated and a lot of people are satisfied with surface level s*** like a protest or seeing a photoshoot of the Obamas but I don't know how much can change if our only strategy is to start getting politicians clapped
what does "pretending to be a man and woman" mean
that user has said with their own words they were a woman in one thread and a man in another
if theyre bigender cool but most likely its an asocial teenager with nothing better to do with their worthless life
This is dope but also mad disappointing to think about.
Like it's CRAZY the things rappers respond to versus what they let slide bro. Niggas will call you out your name, French was selling wolf tickets about this nigga for mad long and no smoke for him but it was for a woman that made a tweet that didn't actually say names and has now honestly...her point was proven right.
@AmoryBlain
Lol all French said was that when it came to hit records he’d be able to take him because that’s not the kind of artist Kendrick is. He didn’t even disrespect him and said it wasn’t his intention
Kendrick is able to read beyond headlines and knew what’s up
Good post and i like how music can really create these types of think pieces. Music is an art of communication and discussion.
Also agree with everything you said. He suffers from his own expectations of what he feels like his role is. I hope he realises he doesn’t have to completely abandon messages he’s trying to put across, but i also get it
Dont get me wrong, he did accept his role as some saviour of rap and compare himself to Pac, but fans put him on that pedestal in the first place, and like he said, celebrity dont always mean integrity. We shouldn’t idolise artists to an expectation beyond thought provoking music
I agree ultimately, but I guess my question is what can Kendrick do that he hasn’t already done? TPAB proved he can ignite a flame in people as we saw this year, but 6 years later what’s really changed?
Gonna CC @op because he replied something similar I just saw
the fact that we're asking "what can kendrick do" is the problem
he's an artist, he can make art about whatever he wants
that being said, he positioned himself in the culture as having a voice for certain systemic issues, he gets called out on it in a critical time for US politics and tense racial climate
what does kendrick do? retreat and gets anrgy with us for considering his opinion in the first place
kendrick can start a yodeling career, idgaf lol he acts like we can't critique his stance
which to me indicates a strong narcissism and an interest in being perceived as "the savior" being more important than actually contributing to conversation or solutions to systemic racism in a meaningful way
he seems angry he looked like he "fell short" during the 2020 BLM protests not that he misunderstood why respecting eachother isn't gonna make police respect us
naturally, he'd divert attention from responding to any criticism to talk about himself and all the personal reasons why he can't deal with us right now, why noname should have just sat there and eat her food
and yes alot of artists are narcissists, some with savior complexes cough cough YE cough cough and alot of other insecurities/issues, Im not reducing kendrick to only that, I just wanted to point out how I view it from that lense
