I think that Kendrick is realizing that he needs to get his house in order first, he's not resigning from playing a meaningful part in society altogether
I could see it either way, but to OP’s point it doesn’t have to be a binary. He’s more than earned time to take care of his family and decide what his relationship with the public looks like afterward
Nah but I actually agree. He sized himself up as the leader of a revolution since Section 80 and now he's confused why mfs looking at him as a savior ?
Not confused but overwhelmed
that line was 100% towards himself
Idk how I didn’t get it on the first listen but it’s plainly obvious now
@op really good write up
here's a thought I had whilst reading it:
what happened to the interview where he talked about black people having to respect eachother more before asking police to respect us (Im paraphrasing but that was the sentiment)
he got backlash for that and I personally think he didn't learn anything from it since, TPAB has several lines where he suggests indiviluasm as the solution to systemic issues
idk how much he cares for that topic if being challenged on it once or twice makes him retreat, I think that's the dissapointing part for me (especially considering that this is HIP HOP)
no one was looking to him to be a savior, maybe people just react to the marketing/praise TPAB got due to some of it's content and thought he was a little more motivated than his peers to adress racism
on DAMN there's a line on the song ELEMENT:
" Last LP I tried to lift the black artists
But it's a difference between black artists and wack artists "
so yeah, he really been over it for a while now but still wants to give his opinions on s*** for instance
"on wordlwide steppers",
he was still "preachy" telling people what he thinks is wrong with them (take of your this and that, go listen to the song tbh )
then ending the song with
" Eight billion people on Earth, silent murderers
...
The noble person that goes to work and pray like they 'posed to?
Slaughter people too, your murder's just a bit slower "
idk what he means by that line but he seems to just hate people now
yes kdot it's the "noble person who goes to work" that is killing people now...... yuck
Aren't the worldwide steppers finishing lyrics him just saying that everyone has flaws whether you're the bigshot or just a regular human, essentially saying we all make mistakes?
I didnt take that as him killing people
Not saying he is right or wrong but thats just what I got from the lyrics
touche
She does AMAZING work, which is why it's crazy it seems the entire rap world, a world full of abusers, pushers, dealers, rapists, and the glorification of all of this s***, jumped on Noname for one tweet versus niggas that got legit rape cases on them where the rape kit was confirmed including bite marks AND they plead guilty to em.
Hip hop is all about hierarchy among artists and full of misogyny too, it was a disproportionate reaction for sure and i wish they were more open to hearing her perspective too
Idk if anyone else had this interpretation of the album, but compared to previous projects of his it felt remarkably lacking in religious themes. Maybe it’s my own agnosticism coloring this, but it felt to me like there’s a layer of “God is dead, therefore we’re our own saviors” in the message. The biggest a***og is the line about 2Pac, obviously, but compared to DAMN’s perspective on religion and even the Heart Part 5 it felt remarkably secular and almost dejected in its lack of faith
And that to me colors the disappointment OP mentions. What’s the point of breaking your back for an ungrateful society if there’s no god to reward you? If your mission on earth for societal change has “failed”, why not focus on your family?
So it seems like you pretty much agree and empathize with Kendrick’s standpoints on choosing himself over trying to be a savior, but you don’t like the way he went about it?
It’s just hard to see what your hard point is here
Great post I hadn't thought that verse was an address of Noname
Yeah I fully didnt connect with it being about that,it makes perfect sense now
This Kendrick therapy session for his album and he open for all us. We should all appreciate him.

the praying to trees and s*** made it obvious imo.
homie definitely lost faith I feel.
he keeps saying he is not our savior and i think thats just him coping, in reality he does want to be our savior he just doesnt know wtf he should do, he doesnt know how to deal with all of it, and in a very superficial way i can empathize with that bc the last couple years have been A LOT, lots of ppl became radicalized or, worse, dangerously apathetic
ok good, cause you was sounding unhinged for a second there.
Tell me what this post is about in your view and how you feel about it. Like actually let me know please

He outright denounces religion a few times and it was a very big change compared to Damn,I like how we see him evolve as a person
Tell me what this post is about in your view and how you feel about it. Like actually let me know please
you came in this thread b****ing (like you kinda usually do, it's a trope) for no reason even while good discussion was coming out of it.
Hence our heightened state of alarm.
Kendrick actually presents his thoughts in a coherent way and its clear he has something to say, whether its good or bad or you agree or not, he has a stance and he goes by it.
Kanye literally doesn't present his thoughts with anything concrete, his politics are just incoherent rambling, and you are never in the know so people can't really discuss something thats so volatile
Kanye is more coherent on his views in his music but is just incoherent in interviews.. there is no ambiguity in say a song like New Slaves he really is talking about systemic racism and the prison-industrial complex.

I said, "Mr. Preacherman, should we love thy neighbor?
The laws of the land or the heart, what's greater?
I recognize the study she was taught since birth
But that don't justify the feelings that my cousin preserved"
The building was thinking out loud, bad angel
That's when you looked at me and smiled, said, "Thank you"
The day I chose humanity over religion
this part especially
Not confused but overwhelmed
Right, it’s hard to remember because I remember looking at him like this deified figure back then, but bro was barely 24 when GKMC dropped
The grand world is out of your control. Focus on your own world/life you'll find happiness and balance there. Seems like a mature Kendrick to me

I said this in the Kendrick album thread but I think this album is his way of being a savior for people, depending on how you view it?
Because to me, the way this album reads to me is a blueprint on how to better yourself and those around you. Kendrick is showing us the steps he’s taken to confront his own bias, hypocrisy, and perceived failure, and then showing us how he copes with them.
IMO this can be applicable to pretty much any person who feels some societal or familiar pressure to be a leader or something along those lines.
The album IMO isn’t explicitly saying “ain’t no hero get out”, he’s showing us how we can be our own heroes.
Kanye is more coherent on his views in his music but is just incoherent in interviews.. there is no ambiguity in say a song like New Slaves he really is talking about systemic racism and the prison-industrial complex.
Yeah absolutely but that was 10 years ago, idk nowadays his stance is very abstract, he jumps left and right on a lot of issues and he just seems misinformed
