Critical acclaim was never really apart of Cudi’s legacy fr

Honestly he’s one of those artists that was first on a lot of s*** and other artists benefited from the work he put in and refined certain aspects of his vision. His albums exist in this weird space where they were clearly ahead of their time in certain ways but some of the ideas didn’t age that well or were expanded upon

Imo what he represented was never FULLY captured in his albums. Although I understand his frustration, a good review wouldn’t do anything for him bc it never did in the first place. When I first heard MOTM I was lowkey disappointed. His ceiling was so high plus he had the GOOD backing. I didn’t agree with the low scores but I understood the lukewarm response on a critic level. It was a blend of him bringing something new and not executing his full potential so some of the ideas kinda fell flat

What Cudi lacks musically he makes up for it with charm, personality, and relatability. I think what his albums/songs mean to people and what they meant to the game is what truly matters. Imo he never really dropped that masterpiece level album I wanted him to. I used to wish critics didn’t go hard on him too but he’s one of the most important artists of his gen which is saying a lot
