Critical acclaim was never really apart of Cudi’s legacy fr

Honestly he’s one of those artists that was first on a lot of s*** and other artists benefited from the work he put in and refined certain aspects of his vision. His albums exist in this weird space where they were clearly ahead of their time in certain ways but some of the ideas didn’t age that well or were expanded upon

Imo what he represented was never FULLY captured in his albums. Although I understand his frustration, a good review wouldn’t do anything for him bc it never did in the first place. When I first heard MOTM I was lowkey disappointed. His ceiling was so high plus he had the GOOD backing. I didn’t agree with the low scores but I understood the lukewarm response on a critic level. It was a blend of him bringing something new and not executing his full potential so some of the ideas kinda fell flat

What Cudi lacks musically he makes up for it with charm, personality, and relatability. I think what his albums/songs mean to people and what they meant to the game is what truly matters. Imo he never really dropped that masterpiece level album I wanted him to. I used to wish critics didn’t go hard on him too but he’s one of the most important artists of his gen which is saying a lot

do you feel like aknc represented him better?

    RESIGNED

do you feel like aknc represented him better?

Lmfaooo it’s funny you ask this because I always lowkey felt it did

That was my intro to Cudi. At the time I was fw him for the potential he showed. The mixtape format allowed some freedom. That old mixtape structure made it so artists didn’t have the pressure of having a big single and big name feats/producers. Didn’t have to be as cohesive/neatly packaged as an album

With AKNC the larger than life, “Cudi saved my life” aspect of his perception didn’t exist yet. He was just a cool artist bridging the gap between all these different worlds. Over time his sound became more musical and expansive but I never felt like there was an exponential leap in the QUALITY of his music

MOTM series has a lot of his best/most important records. He made a smooth transition into being more than just a rapper which is cool but it added a layer to his music that I became indifferent towards. He started singing more and placing more emphasis on the “alternative”/indie pop element of his sound. I respect it but it doesn’t mean much to me if the music isn’t that much better

My initial perception of him was a rap artist with some cool outside the box ideas like Kanye. He sang sometimes, rapped about cool nigga s***, blended street wear with rock fashion effortlessly. He was able to exist in all these different worlds at once without forcing too much of any element. Over time I started to notice he was one of the artists white kids listened to when they were going into their rap phase lol his fan base started changing as a result of his visibility and I feel his music changed evolved into something that served more of those fans. This attracted the “I don’t like rap but this guy is DIFFERENT” element to his perception. That stoner s*** too lmao it started to feel like he just wanted to serve those fans

MOTM had some pop, melodic elements that I wasn’t sold on at the time. The production was cool but felt too synthetic at times. Like it was pushing for a spaced out/futuristic style. AKNC was a blend of a bunch of styles that formed something that FELT new. Rapping on Outkast and NERD classics then doing Paul Simon remakes. It’s almost like he stopped rapping altogether so that removes the Down and Out, Save My Soul element to his music

Maybe I’m biased though lol at the time that tape was so cool to me. MOTM still classic to me and it def grew on me over time but I understand why someone wouldn’t think it was all that great

It was 808s, to be fair, this came out a year after 808s and the disruption had already occurred. The division between reactions to 808s had been a conversation for a year so it’s influence definitely spread

The plain pat production on welcome to heartbreak and paranoid are why it sonically has a cudi vibe, cudi didn’t produce any of the songs.

you're a complete hater with invalid opinions if u disagree tbh

I'm not disagree, he's right, this album saved so many lives and we have a whole wave of rappers acting depressed and weird but what he said is pretentious af

    Mid on the Moon

  • Oct 6, 2021

His only good albums are Demon Slayer, MOTM 3 and KSG

  • Oct 6, 2021

Man on the Moon is way better than a 4.1 but going back and changing scores you gave out because you were on the wrong side of history is mad corny

  • Oct 6, 2021

MOTM1 is perfection and peak Cudi

I can't skip a single song on this album. MOTM is the gold standard of psychedelic influenced pop rap. Travis is the only person that has came close w/ Rodeo and Astro imo.

  • Oct 6, 2021

had never seen this before. Nine inch nails fragile originally getting 2.0 was always biggest p4k offender for me but this might be worse

  • Oct 6, 2021

they could have given it a normal score like 7.8 or more like 8.4.
not sure why they were so offended back then. it doesnt make any sense to me. the impact was big when it came out and it was clear that he changed what kanye started and that there would be a lot more to it
