I mentioned this before but it feels like a compromised Schrader movie to me, something about it just doesn't click fully, I'd still give it like an 8/10 though, there are stretches that are just unbelievable

What would you consider an uncompromised Schrader movie?

His writer-director stuff, particularly his most recent work, The Card Counter being a perfect example of The Schrader Movie, Scorsese made some contributions to Taxi Driver that deviated from his original intent, and I feel like they detract from the film for the most part, even if I definitely prefer Scorsese's movies overall

Word I feel you. Personally I like first reformed way more than card counter. Hoping his new movie that’s coming out is good

Same here, I like The Card Counter, I feel like it's a more accurate embodiment of his style, but First Reformed might be his masterpiece, it reminds me of Samuel Beckett's work in how it just refuses to lie to you or comfort you in any way, but the nightmare doesn't come from the mundanities of everyday life, it's something much greater that will drive you insane if you look at it for too long

Honestly hard to tell, I've heard critics come out with almost every possible reaction to it, I think it'll definitely be more of the same, but I don't mind that from Schrader in the same way I don't mind that from Ozu, you know what you're getting into, there's something almost comforting about the rhythms, I definitely want to see it though

He one of the few where I get interested in a plot like this
