  • Rep. Green probably doesn't need our money. He got 77% of the vote in 2022, and Republicans didn't even bother to field a candidate against him in 2024. And his constituents know who he is. He was the first person to introduce articles of impeachment against Trump in his first term.
But other Democrats are watching the response to Green―and if The People rally around him, we could see more bold actions that treat Trump’s presidency like the emergency that it is.

U.S. President Donald Trump's administration is planning to revoke temporary legal status for some 240,000 Ukrainians who fled the conflict with Russia, a senior Trump official and three sources familiar with the matter said, potentially putting them on a fast-track to deportation.

  • npr.org/2025/03/05/nx-s1-5316227/trump-order-dismantling-education-department

"President Trump is expected to issue an executive action as early as Thursday calling on Education Secretary Linda McMahon to "take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education," according to a draft of the action obtained by NPR.

The move has been expected since early February, when the White House revealed its intentions but withheld the action itself until after McMahon's Senate confirmation. The Senate voted Monday to make McMahon the next education secretary. Democrats uniformly opposed her after McMahon publicly committed to unwinding the department.

The draft action instructs McMahon to act "to the maximum extent appropriate and permitted by law," an acknowledgement that the department and its signature responsibilities were created by Congress, are protected by statute and cannot legally be altered without congressional approval, which would almost certainly require 60 votes to overcome a Democratic filibuster."

By just having the newly confirmed head of the department dismantle things on her own, congress can be circumvented and no filibuster or parliamentarian can stop this.

  • The Christian right have been pushing for the neutering of secular public education for a long time now (the homeschool movement, abstinence only, prayer in schools etc). This dovetails with the more “corporate right” that has been pushing to privatize education since before the bush years.

As a bonus, the charter school enshittification in New Orleans after Katrina offers us some insight into what this world may look like:

That’s what happened in New Orleans, where charters in the first years after Katrina were known to hold invitation-only events to advertise their schools, interview parents and students and then selectively tell them they didn’t have seats, and find ways to push out and not replace lower-achieving, more-demanding students, many of them suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from the city’s endemic violence and the dislocations wrought by the storm. Special-education students were particularly hard hit, prompting legal action by the Southern Poverty Law Center and rulings by Louisiana district and appellate courts that the New Orleans schools were violating students’ civil rights

  • The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has scrapped privacy provisions which otherwise protected people from surveillance based on sexual orientation or gender identity alone, Bloomberg reported last week.

The updated policy manual “removes references to those characteristics in sections that set guardrails on gathering intelligence,” according to the report. “The revisions follow President Donald Trump’s Jan. 20 directive to scrap policies and protections focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion across federal agencies.”

The policy now reads: “Office of Intelligence and A***ysis Personnel are prohibited from engaging in intelligence activities based solely on an individual’s or group’s race, ethnicity, sex, religion, country of birth, nationality, or disability.” Notably absent is mention of similar protections for the LGBTQ community.

The handbook formerly included sexual orientation and gender identity in this list, which would protect some members of the LGBTQ community from targeted surveillance that would infringe upon their constitutional rights.

this is why when we’ve been talking about how bad the democrats are, the “what about trump” argument doesn’t hold up

Like no s***, we know republicans are evil, it’s a hateful death cult. But we also need to dispel the mirage of the democrats because otherwise not-that-horrible people are still hoping some of them can help, they’re given no other options but to play the hope and wait game
