in a hypothetical situation where our military all got on the same page and decided to try to overthrow the government they would succeed with little resistance. this would never happen though.

There are a lot of unanswered questions surrounding January 6th and what actually happened behind the scenes. Major Walker's quick response authority at the capitol was stripped days before the protest, which was openly planned online. The Guard wasn't sent in for hours on the day of. Biden reappointed Secretary McCarthy, the man who restricted that quick response, to his post. McCarthy then resigned amid questioning. Groups were brought to the capitol with assistance from military personnel. Groups there were infiltrated by the FBI.

People think of January 6th as an attempt by Trump to retain the presidency, and many there certainly believed that's what they were doing, but I don't think it's far fetched to say letting it happen was very useful in delegitimizing him. I'm still curious what authority Trump retained from that day until he left office. Nancy Pelosi assured the public that a top general in the US military revoked his access to the nuclear codes. That's very coup adjacent for a general to overstep the commander in chief.

I don’t think you understand how many things would have to go right and how many people would have to be on board for a military coup to work. It’s easy in a country with a military of like 100K people but we have several million. It’s impossible.

We’re much more likely to have a domestic terrorist group than have a military coup.
