Undoubtedly one of the greatest minds we have ever seen in cinema. I will say he is very responsible for the corporatization and sanitization of the form which lead to cinema’s eventual death but there has to be credit given when you realize entire corporations have dedicated billions and billions to seek out thousands and thousands of people to essentially put out a product that can’t even hope to be 1% as good as a James Cameron film.

Titanic, Terminator 1/2, Avatar are all fantastic films but the one that I think really intrigues me is The Abyss, which I feel is the film Christopher Nolan has tried to make his entire career almost. The insanity to commitment of making things so real that it nearly kills you (how many filmmakers but Cameron can actually say this?) that it actually invents a whole new form of cinema right then and there. There has never been a film that has quite looked like the Abyss and while I do appreciate how much Nolan is going for the push towards realism and practical sets, I don’t think he ever will achieve the insanity of the making of that picture, much less the actual visual aesthetic of it.

In case you dont know the story, this is how Cameron pitched Aliens

"James Cameron was young. He had just directed Terminator. Cameron had called a meeting to discuss his "next project." Everyone knew Cameron had written a treatment for Alien 2 that nobody would touch because Alien was not a massive financial success. Alien 2 was not on the table. We expected a professional pitch from Cameron, an outline and a treatment of what he had in mind with a cursory budget; perhaps a couple assistants to run a slide show. Instead Cameron walked in the room without so much as a piece of paper. He went to the chalk board in the room and simply wrote the word ALIEN. Then he added an 'S' to make ALIENS. Dramatically, he drew two vertical lines through the 'S', ALIEN$. He turned around and grinned. We green-lit the project that day for $18 million."
