Me either but I do think it’s definitely a thing where people who are passionate about a medium are easily susceptible to the urge to be more interesting with their taste around their peers. The cultural context around a piece of art is naturally going to affect your perception of it.

It’s just an opinion though. Other than Fleetwood Mac and Elton John I don’t think much of that is very melodic. I personally just don’t think the 70’s generally is very melodic in the way I particularly enjoy. A lot of bands that became popular in the 80’s seemed to agree hence why I referred to the emergence of New Wave.
idk how familiar you are wiht them but meat loaf, carole king and to maybe a lesser extent eagles are very melody focused
this is more nitpicky but New Wave emerged in the 70s anyway
