@Mmm_Hmm I do feel like I’m cheating using Diddy ngl lol
Let me do some research into someone else worthy of repping, I’m leaning toward Lil Jon tbh but if you think this is acceptable let me know
I know what a producer in RAP IS & Diddy is literally the only outlier lmaooo
Puff Daddy disrespect won’t be tolerated fam
So beautiful. I just can’t see him winning
VHS 99 segment he did was godly horror s***.

After witnessing the Tribe vs Outkast VZ blowout and nobody choosing Q-Tip in this producer tournament, I’m convinced ktt doesn’t f*** with ATCQ like that. 😪

They don’t appreciate them like they don’t appreciate Common. It is what it is

i'm completely unfamiliar with A Tribe Called Quest tbh, they were a bit too far before my time and i struggled to find the motivation to get into them. i knew Electric Relaxation because of course i knew it lol. Same goes for Can I Kick It, because of 22 two's by Jay-Z, googling what the f*** that opening chant was, because it was so damn good. Knew Scenario because of of Busta and then i literally only discovered Check the Rhime like 2-3 months ago.
4 songs really. it's so hard for me to actually gauge their importance like i could for other artists before my time for some reason. idk why.
There's just levels man

Damn. This surprised me a lot, because it's coming from you and you're usually on point when it comes to Rap. You didn't have anybody in your family or friends try to put you onto ATCQ? Do yourself a favor and check out Midnight Marauders if you're into Jazzy beats and pretty bass lines.

lmao, yeah, i like to say i have an incomplete education, i wear it like a badge of honor lol. by that i mean, i get to discover old s***, like it's new to me.
i downplayed my discovery of Check the Rhime:
for some reason, i had been heavily, and i mean, really f***ing heavily on a De La Soul trip a few months ago. it was deep. "Hello Prince Paul is the name", oh my f***ing god. lol. i don't remember what drove it but i was obsessed.
for some reason YouTube put Check the Rhime as one of the recommended songs after my many hours of De La Soul. it was just the right time, i was in just the right old school space and hitting play on Check the Rhime felt like something brand new, really felt authentic to me because i had been drowning myself in that sound for weeks.
i think that's what i like about having an incomplete education, it means i take those moments more seriously, because i know, i've missed out on a lot, i wasn't there when a lot of s*** was going down.
i didn't follow up on Check the Rhime, but s***, it's now there, in me, and it ain't going nowhere, if i had tried to force it, it'd have been gone by now.

i think music exists in contexts, and like, a lot of the time, especially with old school music, if you miss the context of why something was great, you don't really get to appreciate it.
like, what was considered trash at the time? what was hip? why were people doing what they did, i think having those questions answered infinitely increases the enjoyment of music.
it's why i think kids like the music they like, they're currently existing in the context. but when looking back, that context often gets lost in high praise or ridicule or disdain.
i try my best, i really do, to not just go back for the sake of going back, but to try and find the context, it means i miss out on a lot sure, but it also means whatever i do end up finding, sticks.

the only song i know definitively here is I Left My Wallet in El Segundo and i think i just know the title.
but this is good actually lol, so check it, in Bonita Applebum there's a sound that plays around 31 seconds in, right? aight. that sound was used in the Fugees song, Killing Me Softly, about 35 seconds in.
i'd recognize it anywhere.
now, before you posted this track, i had no idea that that little bit was a sample, and a ATCQ sample nonetheless.
but that sample is godly and it plays 2 or three times in Killing Me Softly.
when i first encountered the Fugees they were what was hot, that's how a lot of (young) people get exposed to music, by whatever is making the most noise currently. there was no way i could have known about what preceded the noise because i landed on this earth right as the noise was happening lol.
but now i literally have this moment:
there's been a growing appreciation over time for A Tribe Called Quest over the past few months, do not save me posts a link to one of their tracks and i now have the moment of "oh s***, Killing Me Softly wasn't just a good song making noise, it contained a link to a time before me".
there were people who knew exactly what that sample was, who appreciated its use in a different context, *hence the noise.
to me it was just a funny sound that f***ed with my brain like bells in hyperpop.
my education incomplete, i ain't gon lie lol, but it leads me to moments like this, this was actuallly fun for me lol, that sample was actually heaven to me and i always used to wonder what the f*** was going on with that producer that he'd include that sound and why does it fit so well...
