Tried my hand at a few contests this year. 1 short film script contest and 1 full length. I went 0/2 which means I have more work to do but I won’t let that keep me down. It was never gonna happen fast and I haven’t been doing it very long. I’ll keep writing

Luckily, I’ve joined a group where I can get peer reviews from accomplished writers so I can get a better view on what areas I can improve on

    Facts fam keep writing

The beauty about writing is, it’s one of those skills that you’ll get better at as long as you keep writing. The chances of making a career out of it is very likely, just gotta keep going.

Does what have services to pay for the contests or writers group?

True, I knew it was slim chance when I entered. It takes people years to pop off and I’ve only been writing seriously for a year. I just wanted to gauge where I stood but now I know

So there are services I’ve seen where you can pay to get feedback but I’ve never done that.

This writers group is created by the producer of Severance, Nicky Wienstock. Free to join and a lot of the members in the group are also aspiring writers/directors but have made small accomplishments such as being in NBC writers apprenticeship, have made movies, former smalltime actors in Hollywood, etc

They do this weekly writers workshop where someone can enter their script and we all read it and give notes free. They also have a weekly zoom call Nicky speaks to us with a guest sometimes who’s an industry person connected in the entertainment industry talent reps, agents, Hollywood writers, Hollywood actors (Daveed Diggs and Clark Gregg have hopped on a call)

so my idea was for a rom-com.

The premise is basically this guy has a hell of a first date with this woman who ends up ghosting him after the date. He goes in search of her and finds out she's joined a cult. She reveals that she's actually undercover and is a journalist working on a explosive story about the cult. During their time on the commune, they both basically get indoctrinated until one of them snaps out of it before the group does a mass suicide (or bank robbery? haven't decided).

and nah not at all, i've actually never really written a script before so not really sure where to start. I guess outlining the story beats first and then getting into weeds.

Heaven's Gate was an American new religious movement known primarily for the mass suicides committed by its members in 1997.

Just figure out what avenue works for you the most. Penning a script and getting the film off the ground is expensive af. The only hurdle you would have when writing a book instead is that you'd need to find an agent who's passionate enough about your vision so they can get it traditionally published. Or you could just pen your script and sell it. Quentin Tarantino did that early on in his career.

The two traditional ways is either doing an outline (if you’re a heavy planner) or just jumping right in and doing a vomit first draft (if you’re more loose and free thinking)

    I prefer the latter.

Way less pressure with the latter cus you're gonna revise anyway

Facts. I like to explore possibilities of where the story can go rather than “it needs to be this this and this”.

Plus for me it’s a lot easier to reconstruct a draft that already exist rather than trying to construct/plot it out from nothing
