My mother, brother, and I are currently living ng in a rental property. We moved here in 2018 and are very good tenants.

However, back in March, our landlord started acting strange. Like removing the fire pit from the yard and cutting down trees around our house. My mother and I began wondering if he was going to sell the house. So my mother asked our landlord if he was selling the house and he said “No not until years down the line.” So we felt like we didn’t have to worry.

Then in late May he called my mom and told her he had changed his mind and was giving us a 30-day notice to vacate. So my mother made an agreement with him which got him to extend our time to move. Although he has hired a realtor to sell the house, which means showings for our current home will be on Saturdays and Sunday’s and we cannot be home while these showings are taking place (per his request).

Is this legal? Like do I have to legally leave the home during the showings? Because I find this whole situation unfair. My mother and I can’t find a home and the homes/apartments we do find have exaggerated prices due to the market.

I ordered a camera off Amazon so I can watch my room but I hate being forced to leave on the weekends. Like where am I supposed to go? Has anyone ever went through something like this?

Or take chances with KTT lawyers

Hopefully you’ll get it resolved and everything works out in your fam favor

  • Check the paperwork to see if they are allowed to do that first. Also most landlords (at least the ones I have met) give their tenants a week or so in advance if they're doing an open house because they assume the tenants are not tryna be around when someone is walking around their house/apartment.

    11. Right to occupy the property during showings

Tenants are neither legally obligated to leave the property during showings, nor required to keep the space clean to the seller’s standards before a showing. This can lead to tension between seller and tenant, explains Ross.

“Tenants become very emotional, as, for them, this is their home, someone is trying to take away, and they feel justified by doing whatever is necessary to prevent the sale of their home,” he says.

To keep tensions from escalating, landlords can make the process as easy as possible for tenants: offer free cleaning services before showings, find the tenant a new home, or give a gift card to a neighborhood coffee shop for the tenant to visit during showings.

  • Well if he gave y’all 30 days to vacate in may, and it’s been past 30 days, maybe the agreement your mom made with him for letting y’all stay longer is that she agreed to let him do the showings during those times on the weekend
May not be legal but he also legally could prolly kick y’all out completely at any second right now

I never heard of this, I’ve seen plenty of people chilling in their house as I looked thru it trying to find a place to rent. Hell, I’ve been there myself. Playing Smash Melee with my friend in the living room as some mom walks her recent high school grad daughter thru the place.

Maybe it’s different if they’re looking to sell the house instead of rent tho, I dont know
