This might be the first synopsis thread I agree with.

The best argument you can make is that most landlords don’t acquire property from struggling and scraping by on mortgage payments and s***. In reality, their family probably owned a few properties, they inherited them and then decided to accumulate more wealth by renting them. Or in the case of some landlords, they just rent out s***ty properties and slumlord and overcharge.

If y’all want a good perspective of how predatory renting property can be, read Matthew Desmond’s book Evicted. Pretty easy read and it shows you how a lot of poor black people are victimized by this system as well as poor whites.

I’d say most people who are against this either have never had to deal with s***ty landlords, or never rented property, or their parents pay for their rent so it doesn’t matter.

You aren’t considering the people who literally couldn’t afford to pay rent yesterday and now are living in fear of getting kicked out of their place because of a pandemic that wasn’t in their control that has been extremely mismanaged and f***ed due to our administration working against the interests of our nation and politicizing almost every aspect of it

I don’t apply to any of the criteria you listed in your second to last paragraph and I don’t agree with this post

Landlords don’t need to be abolished, if anything there should be some reform in renting laws that favor the renter

But abolishing landlords for some form of state owned housing project sounds horrible to me

You’ve come to the conversation in good faith and have provided more insight since your father is a landlord. Despite the good points made I believe they view landlords as a monolith and can’t fathom that some landlords have worked hard to get there. My parents are the same. Seems there’s a lot of envy in this thread! Despite the other platitudes they’re going for. Honestly that is more embarrassing than anything. Couching their envy in the collective good.

There is nuance because the exact opposite of landlords is govt owning all housing. Govt owning all housing is fundamentally unamerican (not to mention a horrible, horrible idea) although I imagine that excited you more than bothers you. With nuance you can identify that a generational wealth gap exists that allows exploitation of lower classes and usually minorities and talk about real solutions that don't violate the constitution

i think the argument comes around that landlords actually really aren't personal, in some cases they may as well be corporate entities. there's regions in the united states where poor folk (especially black poor folk) are unable to negotiate, sue, or even talk to certain landlords because they simply don't have the capabilities.

this is just individuals too. when landlords hire property management companies, the connection is completely cut, and you're just talking to a faceless entity that gives no s***s about your current situation unless you've got the money to pay. and in a lot of cases, landlords will always try to gouge people with their rent prices.

Adam Smith said it best in Wealth of Nations, Chpt 11 (forgot the page number):

"The rent of the land, therefore, considered as the price paid for the use of the land, is naturally a monopoly price. It is not at all proportioned to what the landlord may have laid out upon the improvement of the land, or to what he can afford to take; but to what the farmer can afford to give. "

I mean it’s true Adam Smith was critical of big landlords because he opposed monopolies, but iirc, he did not have an issue with small landlords

    *accidentally hit post to early

the problem with big landlords is they can control more properties without any direct competition, allowing for slum like conditions (which is kind of what you mentioned in your post) without providing the people with any alternatives due to lack of competition, which I am against as well

but I am not against the idea of landlords at all, especially in favor for a state run option

i still believe reform in renting laws that favor the person who rents is a better option than anything to do with abolishment or government control

who tf cares whats unamerican lol? the values of this country don't mean s***. and no, that is not the direct opposite, only in your mind.

and yeah, the real solutions would be you know, giving people housing where they don't have to pay half their income in rent or a mortgage or whatever, and also, f*** the constitution. illegitimate document

Only reason it sounds horrible is because you know our government doesn’t actually do it’s job and provide for the people. It’s a deeper issue than just substituting renting from predatory landlords to some government provided alternative.

It has to do with poor wages and inability to make payments due to the way mortgages are set up. Not to mention how most people’s wealth is tied to their home and most black people were barred from purchasing homes and now have no way of accumulating wealth.

If you don’t think that renting perpetuated systemic poverty, I think you’re denying reality.

Renting is essentially just throwing your money away every month to someone who doesn’t do anything besides give you the authority to live in their property and have ultimate power. The imbalance is already bad enough

I'm not so sure it's envy driven. I think people are genuinely frustrated but they just don't really understand how it really works. There are surely large conglomerates that are s***ty and predatory in their renting practices, but a large amount of rented property is owned by the common man just trying to make some more money to give their families a better life up until maybe recently my dad never made more than like 20k in a good year off his properties and I know so many more people that own property that are similar to him in their approach. Housing in America needs work, but villanizing property ownership is misguided.
