Ivan’s Childhood 8
Andrei Rublev 9
Stalker (rewatch) 10
The Mirror (rewatch) 8.5
Nostalgia 7.5
The Sacrifice 8
I’ve been going through Tark’s films, saved a Solaris rewatch for last since its the only film I actually liked of the three I originally saw. With pretty much all of the films it’s a battle between cinematic beauty and clarity. Ivan’s Childhood is his least ambitious, but it’s short and incredibly easy to follow. I feel like a third Mirror watch would potentially be super great, bc I liked it A LOT more this time around, but things were still jarring and incoherent af at times. And then Stalker pretty much destroyed me; I’ll probably get a criterion for it this month

Still haven't gotten around to watching his last 2 yet though. Been meaning to for a hot min now

Both have a fair share of amazing visual moments, they are both abstruse af in parts tho! Particularly the endings; w both films I was pretty much like “this is sorta amazing but I don’t know wats going on” and that took away from my enjoyment.

Just gotta let go and give yourself over the image sometimes
You hate everything though

On the topic of Annihilation I loved Stalker.
Also watched Police Story couple days ago which I really really enjoyed

I love "Ivan's Childhood" so much in part because of its clarity. You can really see that it's someone who knows what he's doing and just pushing it. Also the birch scenes and the well etc.
One of my favorites of his tbh
Not surprised your rated Mirror more on a rewatch. Feel like most of the negativity around it would be that fight you mentioned between the film and your mind wanting clarity. But with Mirror its really just about parameters. Actors playing multiple characters turns out quite confusing when you don't have good markers for that and when you're not Russian and don't have the cultural knowledge to easily identify stuff that would indicate where the f*** you are its even harder lol. Because at its core its pretty straight forward

the sacrifice climax had me like
Spanish teacher showed Coco in class. Fifth time watching but god I love this movie do much
9/10 for me
Just saw Midsommar... these white male directors are really stealing a living in Hollywood. Truly the worst film I've seen all year and nothing even comes close

Yeah that and Velvet Buzzsaw are tied for my absolute bottom of the barrel out of the 2019 films that ive seen
Parasite 9/10
didn't know much going into this one but one of my favorite movies i've seen in a long time, really kept me on the edge of my seat.
Lighthouse 5/10
Had high expectations for this one because I loved the Witch and Robert Pattinsons recent films, but this one really missed the mark for me. Didn't seem to conclude the way I wanted it to and it seemed to build up to nothing.
Climax 7/10
Gaspar Noe does a great job of making me say "what the f***" interesting watch and left me thinking.
BURNING, its available on netflix (for now)
really great film 10/10
Just saw it! I wanted to catch it last year but never got a chance, really really really f***ing fantastic, 9/10

Midsommar, the last black man in San Francisco and the farewell are some of the worst atrocities on modern cinema
Finally saw Police Story, and holy f*** what an insane ride it was. The fight choreography is insane in this movie and it has some great comedy as well. I need to watch more of Hong Kong action movies cause this was amazing. 9/10
