I think John Singleton knew exactly what he was doing when he made this film. this one of those films that become more and more relevant as times go on. Ving Rhames put on a masterclass. Snoop surprisingly did a great job. Tyrese, even with some of the overacting (which I believe was instructed under the direction of Singleton) was really good. nobody else could play Jody, I can't imagine anyone else. Taraji was great. All around good movie, with a contemplative message about what it means to be masculine, how men fall short of this standard that has been set, and how that can effect how the world views us (especially as black men) and how we view ourselves.
