The monolith endowed knowledge at key moments in mankind's development and the elegant ending room was just the higher beings conjuring a setting he'd feel comfortable in as they gently nudged him on to the next phase of human development as the Starchild

So you're saying he cruised into the monolith and it showed him those visions and now he turns into that ugly ass baby in the end? That's trippy... but yeah, the whole thing about the monolith noticing all the key moments in mankind's development makes sense.

How does it travel tho? It was on earth during evolution, then it was on the moon, then it was floating in space, inbound for jupiter

It doesn't travel, there were three of them. The first one us placed back in the dawn of time and gave early humans the idea to start using tools. The second one was buried on the moon and set up so that when humans are finally smart enough to find it and uncover it, it would then send a traceable signal to the monolith orbiting Jupiter (triggered by sunlight). That one opens up into a wormhole (not visions) when Dave enters it which yeets him across the universe to the higher beings hood, and then after he evolves he travels all the way back with a mere thought.

I probably only pieced half that together after make my dad forced me to watch it my whole life ngl the real fine points I learned from the book

Still wish more movies forced you to pay attention and makes jumps of logic like this does "show not tell" is what truly separates cinema from the other artistic mediums

I miss movies like The Nice Guys & The Gentlemen

They rarely make "comedies" like this now.

You'll see one and then it will be years until a proper fun movie drops

this was great need to watch more neo-noir expeditiously

the atmosphere was incredible, takes place in florida during a heatwave which serves as a fantastic backdrop. they really make you feel that unbearable suffocating heat and humidity all the way through. also my goat Mickey Rourke was flawless as usual

"You're in hell, little man. And I... am the devil"

"You're not the devil. You're practice"

    Enjoyed the movie tho

ima be honest i said “the first half” because i stopped watching halfway in lol

finished it last night and the corny dialogue arguably gets worse lmao. that entire car chase scene is hilarious when “batman doesn’t kill” is considered and he’s crushing cop cars with officers inside and flips like 10 cars going full-speed. also totally forgot he gets out of a building swarming with cops after by summoning a giant swarm of bats to distract everyone which is way funnier than it is badass

liam neeson is great though, even with a couple dumb lines of his own. wish scarecrow had been given a little more power in the plot or something because he’s one of my favorite batman villains and he’s basically just in the movie to be (laughably) useless after he gases rachel.

i’d still probably put it over most of the batman movies before it, but the quality is way closer to those movies than the dark knight imo. i guess it’s the curse of being the prequel to one of the best superhero movies ever, i can’t help but compare the two

I get the complaints about dialogue, as someone who also did a rewatch of the Nolan trilogy. Personally, I didn't mind it that much; both Batman Begins and TDK still hold up (well, I mean TDK obviously lmao) and TDKR is flawed but it's quite alright, even though it's not as good as TDK. it's just that TDK is so great that even the movies that sandwich it pale in comparison

Watched Full Metal Jacket for the first time

    5/5

Watched it with my dad and knowing he served in the Marines in Vietnam. F*** man. What my dad had to go through and just kinda “experiencing” it with this movie had me lost for words. The brutality of this movie was felt and I was just so shaken cus my dad has told me some stories but the fact my dad is pretty much “normal” and not totally f***ed up from the war is a blessing

Love my dad so much. My hero.
