It dropped like 2AM for me so I gave it one listen and geeked out then went to sleep

This is cool and Kendrick is definitely a once in a lifetime artist who is absolutely meticulous in his dedication to the craft. However I feel like the majority of people will just always hype up whatever he does, partly because they don’t want to appear like they don’t understand the depth of his work. Again, not saying this is trash at all, but if the album is some mid people will still gas it up because they want to seem intellectual. Just my two cents

Is the depth of his lyrics overrated? Yes. But he’s mostly hyped for writing dope songs and his words are rarely placeholders like they are for too many artists nowadays.

The latter. The song is good. It’s just struck me that I hardly ever see anyone criticize any of Kendrick’s music and the above is my hypothesis as to why. He’s an amazing artist but it’s crazy how little criticism he gets for an artist of his stature. Was just making a (perhaps ill-informed) observation

Is the depth of his lyrics overrated? Yes.

I've held that opinion ever since DAMN: Kendrick Lamar might be the best writer in rap right now. like his lyrics on its own are insanely well-written: every piece is there for a reason, the prose is airtight and perfectly executed, and everything connects in one form or another. wouldn't be surprising if he works/consults with book editors on making sure it all works as well as it does

I actually think people underrate him as far as writing goes, if you look at DAMN from that perspective you might see where that pulitzer came from

I get you, but as a listener I wouldn’t worry about such thing until the album drops. Besides that, it could be due to the wait between DAMN. and this next album that even if the album turns out bad (which I doubt) some people will end up being happy with what they got on some “appreciate him while he’s alive” beat and the other will just scream “WE WAITED 5 YEARS FOR THIS??”

And still, he usually gets a lot of criticism for DAMN. being “too mainstream” or “not structured well” he just knows how to drop music that will satisfy the public opinion while being rewarding to those who are picky with their critique
