Nice observation but you’re putting words in kendricks mouth by saying the ā€œwhole themeā€ ties into playing it front to back. Great artists make albums and songs that sound like complete, universal, and coherent thoughts. Kendrick did that and then sold the album w the reverse track listing because the fans wanted it.

You’re gunna sit here and tell me the reverse order is as coherent or lucid as the regular order? You're saying it’s ā€œall thereā€ so I’d love to know what about the entire body of work makes the narrative as applicable back to front as it is front to back outside of the story and ending of Duckworth.

i'm not saying that playing the album backwards completely changes the meaning of the album. quite the opposite, actually. i think that the album being able to end with BLOOD. or DUCKWORTH. without altering the overall meaning is the point.

without those two songs, DAMN. is just a collection of deeply personal thoughts and feelings from kendrick. some fun moments as well which don't really tie into the album's messaging. if you eliminate the "wickedness versus weakness" idea, what do you have left?

when he performed in vegas last year, he put up little descriptions of each album before playing them. two lines stood out to me about his description of DAMN.: "damn if i do, damn if i don't" and "a song that never ends." once again, i believe that his message is that certain things in life (such as death) are inescapable - good people die every day, and so do evil people. living a good, moral life can be your downfall. as for "a song that never ends," i think that is referring to the viscous, inescapable cycle of fate. bad s*** is never going to stop happening, even to good people.

maybe i'm not going into enough detail, but i also stand by the fact that kendrick wouldn't say something if he didn't mean it. did he sell the deluxe version for some extra sales? sure, i can believe it. i don't think that changes the fact that he actually had a vision for the album being played in reverse without losing its meaning, though. the normal version is a story of wickedness, the reversed version is a story of weakness, and they're both stories about how nobody is safe from fate.

The narrative is applicable back to front because the narrative doesnt follow a linear path, where tracks need to follow some chronological order.

As the other poster said the album ties into reaching the same conclusion with different paths. So the placement of Duckworth and blood are really the only thing that matters.

You're right in that kendrick didn't explicitly say this. But this quote from him kinda hints at the wickedness/weakness angle.

ā€œI don’t think the story necessarily changes, I think the feel changes,ā€ he continued. ā€œThe initial vibe listening from the top all the way to the bottom is … this aggression and this attitude. You know, ā€˜DNA,’ and exposing who I really am. You listen from the back end, and it’s almost the duality and the contrast of the intricate Kendrick Lamar. Both of these pieces are who I am.ā€
