Odd future - the new alt rap scene, for better or worse

Dj mustard - that whole couple years where every beat sounded like a mustard beat

All these people had a direct on what music sounded like OUTSIDE of their own work/features.

in terms of impact in music… ain’t no body tryna sound like Kendrick. Outside of baby KEEM go figure

And that’s okay. Kendrick is probably the best rapper to ever record a song, but no one wants to make a Kendrick Lamar sounding song.

You right I think it’s just that those artist sound aren’t really that mainstream so you never really hear it appreciated by the masses. Drake , future and thug sound are so popular that whoever they influence that sound will be heard exponentially cause of its popularity.
Either way Kendrick going to go down with Prince, Bowie, Stevie wonder, Marvin Gaye’s and Beatles as a music icon .

This is just because, for as great as Kendrick is, nothing he’s ever done can really be considered innovative sonically, so newer artists aren’t trying to sound like him due to the fact that he’s not taking the genre in any direction we haven’t seen before.

All those guys you named did something to push the genre forward throughout the 2010s: Drake with R&B/pop/dancehall fusions, Future with trap music, Migos with their flows, Young Thug with his overall zaniness and vocal inflections, etc.

None of Kendrick’s projects are particularly innovative or boundary pushing, they’re just the highest quality offerings of sounds we’ve heard before in rap music, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it explains why Kendrick isn’t as influential as some of his peers.
