It might show he’s wrong because despite all the glowing reviews, it’s not like the media ever convinced the masses his music was it

    you might be right

The thing is even on that same song where he said repeatedly "I want to be like Nelson" he also acknowledges that he's not perfect on that song either.

"As I lead this army, make room for mistakes and depression"

"When s*** hit the fan, is you still a fan?
When s*** hit the fan, is you still a fan?
Won't you look to your left and right? Make sure you ask your friends
When s*** hit the fan, is you still a fan?"

I listened to that whole song recently and it's interesting cuz he kinda echoes the same sentiments there in between the grandstanding.

And yea people killed Cole, but folks act like Noname (no matter how well intentioned she was) kinda pulled a weird "where's Ja" moment in the middle of them BLM protests when Cole has showed up for s*** in the past lol

"As I lead this army" c'mon bro lol.

that when s*** hit the fan line is also like...I mean it defends on what the s*** is. All love is conditional and everyone has their own personal line based on their perspectives from the lives they live. For some that line is abuse/rape which once again makes the whole yak thing kinda...funny.

the way they both kinda responded also kinda proved Noname's point tho at the same time.

I also think it's hilarious Noname's turned into a poster child for being 'holier than thou' when like....if you really been a fan you remember she used to be publically called out for her old rap name (Noname Gypsy) and herself realizing and apologizing publicly about it. And also was being transparent when she was first openly transitioning away from capitalist thought (something else she publicly admitted she was wrong about)

Not to sound ignorant but what does deadname mean?

Sorry if that’s a dumb ass question.

Referring to a trans person to their old name or pronouns before they transitioned

Sorry if that’s a dumb ass question.

a trans person's deadname is their birth name, the name they no longer go by. in this example, kendrick's cousin mary-ann's deadname is demetrius. when trans people are referred to by this name, it is usually taken as a derogatory action, and it often makes the person feel invalidated, as if they aren't the gender that they really are

It’s cool but also a little baffling that all of us (myself included) are a***yzing these songs so deeply for a message. Maybe Kendrick just wanted to use his music to tell more of his story and get things off his chest. Most other artists just rap about their lives and get praised for being introspective and open. Some people seem almost disappointed that some of these songs may not go deeper and preach a lesson to society

Exactly the same. Those 2 for me are We Cry Together and Purple Hearts. And for you?

Let’s be real here. How many times can one actually bump Auntie Diaries before it becomes unlistenable? It was 5 for me.

i feel like there could've been a way to do that without saying the f-slur like 10 times, especially considering he is cis and straight

The song is anti f-slur by the end. I think it's more of Kendrick using himself as a template to show others how to grow. Heart Part 5 pretty much says that and this album demonstrates it on a personal level.

For me it's mid but only because of the fact that I know what Kendrick is capable of creating. This isn't a top 3 album of his imo and that's disappointing considering the 5 year wait.
But he could release a 2/10 album with the reviewers still praising it simply because they are stans/afraid of speaking their truth due to the backlash
