Who is seriously comparing this to MMLP? Eminem had an MO of deliberately pissing off as many people as possible with MMLP, it’s like clear that Kendrick is not trying to do that here. Even on We Cry Together it’s clear we’re seeing both sides of a fight. Some people really just be wanting to put words on the internet lol

Yeah bro I saw ppl saying it ITT last night, totally agree tho s*** is literally just words on the internet

IMO its a combination of many concurrent factors. Legitimate breakthroughs in human behavioral science + a resurgence in parapsychological/pseudo-occult/border science adjacent beliefs (commonly seen in post-war colonial societies like 50s Germany or late 60s America) + a generation with greater access to history and more open to non-Western schools of medicine, psychology and philosophy

Kendrick weirdly enough encapsulates so much of this current vogue on the album, which is at odds with how it presents itself as a rebuke to conventional current ideals. He makes repeat references to a Jungian collective unconscious, laces the album with soundbites from Ekhart Tolle talking about f***in energy fields, and generally seems to buy into the concept of a mass "seelische Schmerzen" or soul sickness that effects seemingly every aspect of our lives from culture to relationships to media consumption to general health. He also makes reference to and connects "generational curses" both local and international with the s***abuse & forced inbreeding stuff at the end of the album, probably the most popular/common way to conceptualize trauma right nown

How well he does that is up to interpretation but I do think it's interesting that he feels this is at odds with current American culture and not pretty much in line with it

I don’t like how Kendrick stans act like he’s the ONLY artist in ALL of music with substance in their work. It just shows that they need to branch out and listen to more music

Who else is grabbing you substance wise currently? Just wondering

Sales doesn’t dictate if ā€œIā€ like something. I think it’s ludicrous and unfathomable that Dawn FM would be considered AOTY though. Nobody needs to make that statement, ever. If someone said ā€œit’s my favorite album of the yearā€, cool. Don’t compare that s*** to this piece of art though

This album is dope but Dawn FM is still AOTY.

That album is a masterpiece of pop music. Mr. Morale is solid but it’s flawed in some areas.
