I feel like when you play for “the man” then you are bound to be a confused artist. It doesn’t mean he is not a great artist but that it sullies the genuineness of the message.
That doesn’t mean no socio-political art can be great. It’s different when Steven Spielberg directs Schindler’s List to if Christopher Nolan did it (which is why he probably did Dunkirk). But there are artists out there playing the game and you have to be really lost to not see what is happening.
I rather see Kendrick use his formidable artistic technical skills to create something truly universal.
Like even this, supposedly his “Fuck U” album to everybody, is designed to be critic bait. Like it’s the end point where being anti-hipster is actually just a way of being a hipster. Or being a conformist to show how others are more conforming in their non-conformity.
At some point this s*** starts to be more ego than Love. I was a Kendrick fan because of GKMC, which for me is far less political, more personal and universal.
What if I told you that this album is even more personal than GKMC?
