People assumed Kendrick was doing a victory lap show for TPAB/UU at Coachella 2017 until Damn got announced a week before

I still think we are going to hear from Kendrick sooner than we think even if not at these festivals. Mr. Morale did not quite hit for a good amount of rap fans given the hype and I’m sure he is aware of that

have to be completely honest I haven’t returned to this album at all once since the initial hype when it came out

  • One thing about this album that is so great is that it really features such a cohesive amount of why section 80 was one of Kendrick Lamar’s best projects. The story throughout reminds me of the chapters on section 80 as well.

How Kendrick Lamar’s ā€œAuntie Diariesā€ Helped Music Engineer Emerson Mancini Come Out

Emerson Mancini had been transitioning privately, but the engineer who mastered Kendrick Lamar's "Auntie Diaries" — and is now nominated alongside the prolific rapper at the Grammys — says he found the courage to come out publicly through the song.

When mastering engineer Emerson Mancini works on an album, he typically doesn’t listen closely to the lyrics during his first session. But as he engineered Kendrick Lamar’s ā€œAuntie Diaries,ā€ from the album Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, Mancini had an emotional reaction to the words Lamar recited.

ā€œMy auntie is a man now/I think I’m old enough to understand now,ā€ the prolific artist raps.

ā€œI was like, ā€˜What? What’s happening? What is this?’ I ultimately had to stop and play the whole thing,ā€ Mancini admitted. ā€œI needed to know what this is about because I had just started taking testosterone a couple of months prior. The whole experience was really raw at the moment, and it was amazing to me.ā€

ā€œā€˜Auntie Diaries’ is a song that inspired me to come out in a loud way,ā€ continued Mancini. ā€œI wasn’t out to anyone other than a couple of friends. No one professionally, no one publicly. I don’t know if I’ll have a more personal relationship with an album than I do with Kendrick’s in particular because it was really a big thing in my life.ā€

After Mancini mastered Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, he shared the news with Lamar and his team. ā€œI said something to the extent of, ā€˜There’s a lot of bravery and courage on this album, and I would feel remiss if I didn’t partake in some of that for myself’ — and I just told them. And it was met with nothing but love. It was really an extraordinary moment in my life that I’ll never forget.ā€

Now, Mancini — who won his first Grammy last year for mastering Jon Batiste’s We Are — is competing alongside Lamar at the awards show in two major categories: album of the year and record of the year for the conscious track, ā€œThe Heart Part 5.ā€ Mancini is nominated in the same categories for his work on Lizzo’s Special and her No. 1 smash, ā€œAbout Damn Time.ā€

Mancini’s transition is so new that his deadname is how he appears in the credits for Lamar and Lizzo’s albums. The deadname was also used when the Grammy nominations were announced in November but then he sent an email to the Recording Academy.

ā€œI hadn’t bothered trying to do that with Jon Batiste because I wasn’t out yet, so there wasn’t really anything for me to go on or to say on the topic really. I thought, ā€˜Well, this time I’m out, so let me see what happens if I just ask.’ And literally, all it took was one email, and 30 seconds later my credits were changed,ā€ Mancini said. ā€œIt was breathtaking. It was like gravity kind of trembled for a moment. It was pretty wild.ā€

His connection to Lamar is undeniable, and unforgettable.

ā€œThe whole thing was so special to me. I’m just over the moon,ā€ he said. ā€œI didn’t think that there was an iteration of reality where the album wasn’t recognized as being the extraordinary work that it is, but the fact that it received so many nominations, and in the categories that it did, it warms my heart.ā€

Though many praised ā€œAuntie Diaries,ā€ some critics found issue with the song, citing misgendering and deadnaming.

Mancini’s thoughts? ā€œI know there’s been quite a bit of arguments online about what that song means, but it was crafted in order to make a point. And I think it opens an opportunity for people who aren’t or weren’t amenable to trans acceptance when the song starts might be by the time the song ends. I don’t think it’s written for people who already get it. I think it’s written for people who don’t, and I find that to be a really extraordinary and moving experience,ā€ he said.

ā€œTo hear it coming from the perspective of a Black man who is a rapper at a Black church in defense of a trans woman of color who is in his family — all of those things are in one sentence — that’s absolutely mind-blowing and earth-shattering.ā€

I CANT TAKE ANOTHER 5 YEARS NO ALBUM

I think he's dropping again this year. It would be the first album without TDE taking their cut. He'll make more off his PG lang album than any of his other albums. He signed some kind of deal directly with the UMG a couple of years ago, I'm sure he wants to start earning from that ASAP.

    universalmusic.com/universal-music-publishing-group-signs-kendrick-lamar-to-exclusive-global-publishing-agreement-with-top-dawg-entertainment/#:~:text=SANTA%20MONICA%2C%20October%2027%2C%202020,a%20leading%2C%20global%20music%20publisher.

Also it would kill any momentum for PGLang if he takes another long break. It's not like they have a big roster of artists to rollout instead of Kendrick.

    Boi1da Grammy's interview:

I was amazed looking back through stuff you were doing 10, 11 years ago that there were songs of yours that Kendrick was on back then. How has your creative relationship with Kendrick changed over the decade that you’ve known each other?
    .
I’ve known Kendrick Lamar for a long time. I knew him actually before Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City. I had met him through one of my good friends who actually signed him. Our relationship hasn’t changed. Kendrick is one of the coolest guys ever. Me and him always lock in and create music together. We have tons of music that we’ve made together and he’s just a great dude.
    .
Kendrick really makes folks wait and wants to come with something that feels totally different and distinct with each new body of work. What was the direction that he was trying to push on Mr. Morale, and what did you bring to it?
    .
When it comes to me working with Kendrick, it’s really just raw ideas and raw thoughts. A lot of the time, I’m not sure where it’s going or what he’s gonna do with it because I’m not really around for the song recording process. I like to sometimes just give artists…their own creative space and free-flow and whatnot. That’s why he’s one of my favorite guys to work with, because you go in there and it’s like, "Alright, what are we doing?"
    .
I didn’t really know what was gonna happen with "N95" and where he was gonna go with it lyrically. I just recall me, Jahaan Sweet and Sounwave in there, we had cooked up the idea and I was like, "Man, this sounds really dope but I’m not sure where it’s going."
    .
I ended up hearing it right before the album came out. We had done that before the pandemic and the pandemic happened and nobody saw each other for the longest time…and he did what he did to it. It’s always fun working with Kendrick because it’s just raw, it’s literally everybody doing whatever they wanna do and it meshing together.
