I think it would depend. I know she said that song was based in her country Texas roots, but I have a hard time buying the authenticity when I’m not aware of her making that kind of music before or after working w FJM. Same deal with the jack white one.

It would be less jarring on a country album tho, and I honestly don’t know enough about Beyoncé to speak on her personal history w the genre

I also have a hard time buying Justin timberlake’s country roots album for reference. even taylors folk album feels forced despite her well documented country origins.

perhaps i'm projecting on your comments and giving your use of the word jarring a negative connotation. because then it seems like we're putting limits on artistry. there are plenty musicians we all know and love that decide to branch out with their sound, whether it's directly influenced or simply to experiment and keep things fresh. it's actually what some people value most in their favorite artists.

idk. i guess i just don't really see it in the case of Lemonade since rock and country weren't/aren't trendy or gimmicky. another point i'll add is that Bey wasn't really in full control of her career and music until I believe the 4 and self-titled albums, so that could play a part too. maybe her and Hov play nothing but Dixie Chicks and White Stripes in the crib lol who knows.

all in all if everyone simply stayed in their lane, music would be a lot more boring.

it’s not about staying in a lane, it’s about not just using a genre as a template. Good genre bending to me defies genre boundaries, or at least pushes a genre forward. Daddys 6 inches or whatever it is feels like it uses really basic, tropey country sounds. Not because the country sound fits the album well or even sounds that extraordinary, but because it fits the story.

The only reason I have strong opinions about genre bending is cause my brother listened to so much 21 pilots. The reggae guitar breakdowns, house breakbeats, random ukulele verses always felt like more of a surface-level gimmick than a genuine expression. It’s made me pretty sensitive to it when someone uses genre tropes really ham-handed.

man i've read this a few times and i'm not even tryna be a hardass but it seems like a contradicting statement. unless they're two separate thoughts. since Beyoncé is a pop star she shouldn't make a country song unless it's in an effort to push the genre forward? at the least?? again, i'd be more keen on the argument if it was a trendy or gimmicky sound at the time.

i also don't quite get how using certain production to help contribute to the themes and storytelling in a song is seen as a con. i feel like that would help a song translate better and enhance it if anything. whether it fits the album well is subjective i suppose.

i don't get to discuss music a lot on this site so if you're done with this i appreciate the interaction lol

I jerk off to Beyonce with braids everyday. I've spilled more milliliters of semen than sales she generates by talking about how she don't need no man she just got cheated on
