The company was founded in 1959, the term gay didn't acquire a sexual connotation until the 1960s. So yeah... totally a marketing scheme to make money...
Also I don't know what outrage you're talking about. Looks like 98 percent of Australians voted to keep the name as it is. Also looks like the vast majority of gay users on twitter think the idea is just as absurd as I do.
...By the way, there's a popular ice cream company in NYC (one of the gay capitals of the U.S) called "Big Gay Ice Cream". All straight people I've met love it. All gay people I've met love it. Because it's a fun innocuous name and if you're not a moron you can see that.
