Been a fan of Jay-Z since I was a kid in the backseat and my momma was bumping Vol 2. Also pretty much been a fan of Drake since SFG so I know both artist's discos pretty well. They are both two of my top 5 goats of all time and they are very different artist in very different eras who had different trajectories but I still always felt like there are a lot of parallels between them and ultimately Drake is loosely the equivalent of Hov for our generation. I thought it would be fun to look at Drake's discog from that perspective so here goes:

    1. Drake's equivalent of Reasonable Doubt: So Far Gone

    • Both acclaimed classic projects that introduced them to the world, showcasing the artist's potential.
    • Emphasis on lyrical prowess and storytelling.

    2. Drake's equivalent of Vol 1: Thank Me Later

    • Transition to more mainstream sound.
    • Exploration of fame, success, and personal struggles.

    3. Drake's equivalent of Vol 2: If You're Reading This It's Too Late

    • Hits, Bangers, and flows top to bottom.
    • Dominance of the rap game

    4. Drake's equivalent of Vol 3: Views

    • Heavy focus on hits and mainstream appeal but still a fair amount of substance addressing critics.
    • Quality of album is heavily debated.

    5. Drake's equivalent of The Dynasty: More Life

    • Expansion into diverse sounds and influences from other areas.
    • Showcase of versatility and collaborative efforts.

    6. Drake's equivalent of The Blueprint: Nothing Was the Same

    • Career-defining albums, solidifying their status.
    • Most cohesive, concise, and focused projects in their respective discogs.

    7. Drake's equivalent of The Blueprint 2 - Scorpion

    • Double albums with spotty quality but commercial appeal.
    • Addressing controversies and media scrutiny.

    8. Drake's equivalent of The Black Album - Take Care

    • Reflective introspective albums, addressing personal narratives.
    • Incorporation of vulnerability and emotion.
    • The albums each artist took the most care crafting creatively.

    9. Drake's equivalent of Kingdom Come - Dark Lane Demo Tapes

    • Comeback projects after hiatuses.
    • Both underwhelmed but are better than they get credit

    10. Drake's equivalent of American Gangster - Honestly, Nevermind

    • This ones a wild card but essentially they are both concept albums (AG narratively with the movie tie in theme and HNM musically with the Dance music theme)

    11. Drake's equivalent of The Blueprint 3: CLB (Certified Lover Boy)

    • Hit and miss attempts at modernizing old formulas.
    • Addressing legacy, relationships, and personal growth.

    12. Drake's equivalent of WTT (Watch the Throne): WATTBA/Her Loss

    • Collaborative projects showcasing chemistry
    • Exploration of fame and wealth.

again these comparisons aren't meant to be taken literally but this kinda how I see it

    Both double albums

Both rank lower in fans album ranks generally

Both came during a loss of a beef

Obviously its not exactly the same but that comparison makes sense

Jay's Views is Blueprint 3 imo. Has his most popular songs on it with Empire State of Mind and Run This Town, DOA is on there, Off That with Drake, A Star is Born with Cole. Young Forever etc

It's a pop rap album and a lot of Jay purists don't really fw it like that

crazy way to restart the drake doesn’t have a true skipless classic discourse

for years I remember the narrative was that he doesn’t have a blueprint level album. it went away with the Meek beef and him just sticking around for a solid 8-10 years

But Drake definitely doesn't have a Black Album or Blueprint. He might have a Reasonable Doubt with So Far Gone, but thats a stretch

Jay’s best 5 albums are on par with the greatest rap discographies ever

He just doesnt get mentioned in that convo bc he has so many albums and his classics are all spread apart

By far,the coolest rapper of 09,was Jay-Z. Em fans were gonna always be there for him, especially during that time, but the culture crowned Jay-Z as the hottest rapper at that time.
