Lupe dumb as s*** for trying to retire with three albums

To be 100% honest, his initial problems with Atlantic were his fault if we’re bein real.

From what I understand he initially had a 5 (?) album deal with Atlantic, he obv did F&L and the Cool. Then he tried to have LUPE.N.D. count as a triple album so he could finish his contract and “retire”. Lupe was like in his mid or early twenties at the time and just came off two very highly acclaimed albums with his biggest hit yet (Superstar), and was an extremely marketable artist with a ton of charisma and was one of the most respected rappers at the time even back then.

Like no f***ing s*** Atlantic was trying to hold him to actually release 5 albums as their artist at that time lmao. And then when it got ugly Atlantic was just holding on to him out of spite which was the f***ed up part.

And of course they forced him to rap on a bunch of commercial ass songs that he didn’t want to with Lasers and with whatever T&Y was before he was able to change it.

The one where royce has the yellow shirt on?

Edit: nvm I do remember him saying that. I get where he coming from but he still wild for that take.

I’m a fan of both, but both these guys got emotional and took an L for me.

Lupe has this weird take that you can’t call yourself the best if you can’t freestyle.. as if freestyling is 10x worth more points over creating an actual album.

But kendricks debut is s80 bro lol. He didn't have those crutches. The first.time kendrick hit the mainstream he was bigger than lupe was in his entire career and that's why its weird to say he would've would've been Kendrick or he was on some path to be as big as him.

Bro what. Kendrick off s80 wasn't bigger than lupe off food and liquor

s80 legit sold 9k first week while fnl sold 81k

Then I dont understand the point ur making. Cause u said

"Lupe has Pharrell and Kanye on his debut and a Jay Z executie production. Kendrick had none of that and still lapped him."

And someone told u that GKMC had dre executive production and a drake feature

And then u said "kendrick debut is s80 bro lol. He didn't have those crutches"

How did kendrick lapped lupe without those crutches with s80 ?

If we are comparing where they started.

Kendrick debut was an independent album on a indie label. He hadn't done the take care verse, gone on tour with Drake or signed to dre.

Lupes debut was on a major label and he had Kanye and Pharrell production along with Hov executive producing.

I was talking about how ppl say Lupe was on kendricks trajectory before Atlantic f***ed him up.

But as soon as Kendrick got put into lupes major situation with the OG cosign he surpassed Lupe highest point in the mainstream.

Lupe at his most popular was Lasers..

Kendrick at GKMC was bigger than Lupe at Lasers

Also kendrick second album (GKMC) went triple platinum. Lupe has never went platinum with any album.

So I think it's a fallacy to say he was on that trajectory.

Now if we're comparing where they were both in a major label situation. Yea kendrick surpass Lupe, but Lupe still had more barriers than kendrick at the start

I don't think it's far fetch at all to say lupe could of became GKMC level of popularity as kendrick after his 3rd album when the cool became gold in the first few months and hasn't even been certified since 08

You can't say compare where they started and then say indie label or not bro. That's being unfair to Kendrick

If you ask anyone which would you want as your first album

An indie release with no big.names.

    Or a Kanye/Pharrell A and R by hov.joint most.ppl trying to make it.big would choose Lupes situation.

And that's my point. You are comparing them saying it's not far-fetched but it is

Lupe hasn't done what Kendrick did his debut season in the league.

And GKMC went gold after the first month lol and again Taylor swift. Lol. It's such a big gap between them both.

And the closest he has gotten was kenddicks first major label album. Kendrick has grown from.sinxe then

DAMN. Is so far ahead of GKMC as peak it would be unfair to even go that far

  • Jul 25, 2021

Lupe was already ghostwriting for Jay on The Black Album.
As Kendrick was rising, he was given the torch by all the west coast og's. That helps solidify his already incredible artistry.
Dre was already in K.Dots corner, even back in the NBA Live days.

Kendrick was easier to market than Lupe.

Guru (Jay Z engineer) talks about how the exects were being petty when it came to marketing Lupe due to the glasses etc.

Okay u can even compare their major label debuts. Gkmc and fnl. Kendrick still didn't face as many barriers as lupe did when their debuts was out. Fnl leaked months in advance, 2006 was still more focused on gangsta rap, and the label exec's didn't like lupe since his debut.

Like I said before the cool was gold in a few months like 5 compare to GKMC being gold in 2. And lupe 3rd album would of been bigger cause attitudes towards that type of rap was shifting, something kendrick didn't have to really face as much w his debut. I dont think lupe would of been DAMN level, but GKMC/TPAB is definitely not far fetched

Lupe literally talking about hustling and guns on his first mixtape. even revenge of the nerds was hood s*** with a positive perspective

  • Jul 25, 2021

Yea Lupe was never on the same level as Cole / Kendrick popularity wise.. but that Atlantic drama definitely killed any mainstream hype he had. Dude could of had those Haley Williams / Bruno Mars records on Lasers if he played the major label game. Who knows where he’d be if he continued getting major label money and promotion.

In the end Lupe created Food & Liquor before a major label, and is still releasing classics after.. so it doesn’t even matter.

I think you're being a little unfair to Kendrick and are making excuses for Lupe while ignoring the realities of his situation.

Lupe potentially being as big as GKMC Kendrick isnt being on Kendricks trajectory at all. He was never gonna be Kendrick and that talking point needs to stop.

During GKMC Kendrick didn't have a single grammy, never headlined his own tour and never had a top 10 and he was still bigger than Lupe has ever been

I think it sounds good to say for argument sake but you're comparing lupe to someone that just last year

Got called out by French for a hits battle , by lupe for a lyrical battle
All while being only 2nd to the biggest rap star ever in drake commercially.

No one was gonna emulate that.

How is being as big as gkmc/TPAB not kendrick trajectory lol lupe career was trending to that point before it was halted

Yep but kendrick tour w drake, had an interlude on a drake album, had a huge single w rocky, 2chainz and drake 2 days after GKMC dropped. That s*** helped bro
