Kinda crazy how out of all rappers with mainstream success it's Macklemore who's been most vocal about this s*** lately
Macklemore has always commented on social issues so this isn't really out of the ordinary of him.
But what mainstream rappers are even socially aware that you would expect them to comment? J Cole wore a Palestinian flag. Kendrick never comments on anything. I can't even think of any mainstream rappers that I'd expect to be vocal.

That’s part of why rappers today are so neutral.
Superstars of the 90s and 00s were first to speak they minds on s***
The big 3 are averse to talking in general (or about things that affect us) which they are in they right to do so
But “george bush doesn’t care about black people” was a moment for a reason.
the fact you say this and follow up with aesop rock is killing me
Aesop Rock is fun nerdy rap though he is his own lane he isn't trying to be a black rapper nor is he trying to be eminem
Good soul and sometimes that matters more than bad soul and good music.
Also in general I don’t listen to most white rappers .
I am traditionalist in the sense of I don’t go to a Korean spot to have Jamaicans making it in back . I don’t go to a jerk chicken spot and it’s all Mexicans in back
I like whoever culturally made it being the delivery
There are of course cases like Mac miller where it works but it’s often not for me personally
Yeah I'm with you I very rarely give a white rapper a chance. Has to be a Mac Miller or early Eminem
9/10 they're technically skilled with no heart and/or no passion for the culture
macklemore being one of the rare principled celebrity chosen ones shout out to everything hes been using his celebrity for in the last year or so

Even if their heart is in the right place often a label is involved who's heart isn't. Like I enjoyed some Jack Harlow but I dont really need or desire a concept album from any white rappers personally. I am not trying to personally understand a white man or white woman perspective through the format of rap or hip hop. In their own genres I do take all that in. I think they excel there
I ain't checkin for Macklemore music in 2024, and I'm surprised there are enough people out there who still are to book him for international shows. But if it's one thing I can always credit him is that he has always been one of the cool cacs.

I mean most of them are on white owned labels where legally they cant comment or would lose endorsements again as Lupe did
so yes some of it is ignorance but some of it is they control our voice in all forms.
They only want us to speak on black issues. Not show solidarity unless we are from Sudan, Palestine or where have you. Often because they or their friends are invested in the oppression of others
A rapper cant speak on for profit prisons if their owner is invested in them.
like applaud Macklemore but dont hate on black people too much because at the top of the record label and the pr team is someone saying "dont say or do that"

I don't disagree
I guess it's more ironic than crazy

It's also completely different when you're not white
White people "allies" speaking out is a lot less scary than people who are oppressed themselves

thats why I had to push back some because I dont ever want it to lead to white savorism of "wow look at these white people speaking out on issues but not us ". Because Macklemore not going lose as many anything if he speaks out. He has less owners. He from what I know didn't come from deep poverty.
Not making excuses for the cowardice of much of the industry at all because out right many of them are cowards. But as someone who directly saw what Lupe was going through and have talked with him about it since it happened . S***s not easy . Behind closed doors is even more than whats reported on.
When a lot of these black people snap its because they cant handle a lot of what they are seeing or dealing with this in this industry. If they speak out on it they are viewed as snitches not whistleblowers.
The industry doesn't want its demons to come to light especially not their artist profiting from calling them or their friends out
Dope he uses his fame and whiteness to do this though whole heartedly even when things feel hopeless awareness still does matter
You can say whatever about Macklemore’s music - but he always had a genuine respect for the culture.
In a world full of white rappers who turn out to be vultures he is an example of how to treat a black art form with respect as a white artist.

This fair all respect for him
in my opinion kind of a low bar but he does excel. I am not mad at him for being in the space. Same as like a Jack Harlow. I have listened to both some before even if they arent overall for me . Not like a day 1 must listen
