It’s about damn time that KTT has a thread about one of the best and most consistent rapper/rapper-producer duo in the game right now.

• So on the one hand we have Makala, rapper who shines through his lyricism (I know most people here don’t speak French but still ), his numerous flows and his charisma/confidence.
• On the other hand Varnish La Piscine (fka Pink Flamingo) : producer/singer/rapper, major influences from The neptunes, Tyler, Stereolab, Jamiroquai, Roy ayers, herbie hancock, etc…

Both from Geneva, Switzerland and members of the Superwak collective, it’s really impossible to talk about one without mentioning the other. Indeed, Varnish La Piscine has handled the production of every project Makala has ever released since 2013 and you’ll even find him on the cover of Makala’s latest projects. Similarly, Makala always makes an appearance in Varnish’s projects.

Hard to describe their style because of the so many different genres (from trap all the way to disco, funk, bossa nova, jazz etc…) and styles their songs are composed of, just know that they’ve put out projects with some of the craziest production and melodies the music scene has seen in the last few years.

Varnish La Piscine (as Pink Flamingo) - Escape (F+R Prelude) (2016)

Varnish first project. A concept album, it tells the story of Fred Koriban, a young man who just arrived in a psychiatric hospital and is trying to escape.
Really solid debut,

(As the title indicates it seems this project was only the prologue for another album called « Fred + Rebecca » but since 4 years / 2 projects later we have no news of it and he even changed his name it’s safe to say he has completely dropped the idea.)

Makala - Gun Love Fiction (2017)

Makala first EP.
This project marks the point at which not only Varnish drops the Pink Flamingo name, but also starts contributing vocals to Makala’s tracks.
It is also imho at this point that Makala finds his rapping style and Varnish really finds his identity as the producer/artist.
Perfect starting point for anybody who wants to begin listening to them.

Varnish La Piscine - Le regard qui tue (2019)

Second project for Varnish (his first released under the Varnish La Piscine alias) and this time again we have what Varnish likes to call an « audio movie ». The album takes place in 1966 and tells the story of Sidney Franko, a troubleshooter police detective tasked with the capture of Gabrielle Solstice : a Medusa-like femme fatale who has the power to kill anybody who looks into her eyes.
Varnish La Piscine plays Sydney Francko whereas French singer Bonnie Banane plays Gabrielle Solstice. Finally, Rico Tha Kid, Swiss rapper (who grew up in Washington, hence his rapping in English) and longtime Varnish/Makala collaborator plays Angel de Jesùs, journalist/narrator.
One of the most innovative records released recently, which manages to mix successfully hip-hop, funk, 60s movie soundtracks with old science fiction/horror/B movies.

Varnish’s latest project. This time, he's telling a story through a 40 minute movie which he co-directed « Les Contes du Cockatoo » (there’s english subtitles!) and the album serves as the soundtrack.
« Les Contes du Cockatoo » is about 4 ordinary people to whom extraordinary things happen.
