For spectating threads including MMA and Boxing see the stickies in the Sports sxn

For those interested in trying out Martial Arts, the most popular ones that are available are:

    Boxing (striking)
    Kick Boxing (striking)
    Muay Thai (striking)
    Judo (grappling)
    Amateur Wrestling (grappling)
    Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (grappling)
MMA (mixed, obviously, but the gyms will usually have different classes focusing on different aspects too)

Tae Kwan Do, various schools of Karate and Krav Maga are also widely available but be warned of McDojo's for these styles.

McDojo is a pejorative term (in the same vein as “McMansion” and "McChurch") referring to martial arts academies (generally located in the Western world) which, rather than being honestly committed to teaching students, are instead concerned primarily with amassing a profit. You will often see coaches making ridiculous claims about self-defence or deadly skills. Large amounts of kids with black belts is also a warning sign

Don't be scared of your fitness levels or experience when thinking about joining Classes are filled with all sorts of different people from the guy who goes once or twice a week, to the killers that go twice a day, everyday.

Sports and even specific gyms also all carry their own culture! Be sure to shop around and catch the vibe you're looking for. Maybe you don't care for self-defence and think weapons are cool, look into Arnis or Kendo If you think spamming buttons as Eddie Gordo on Tekken is fun, give Capoeira a go!

I mainly do BJJ but I mix in some kickboxing sometimes too.

Both I do purely for fun and to promote an active lifestyle (forces me to eat clean and take care of my body)

    thousandholds.net/podcast

This podcast is good stuff for people who like learning about history. The guy who speaks on it looks into folk-styles of grappling and their roles within their perspective society. He doesn't just skim over random wiki pages either and tries to deep dive into the research as much as possible.

Ayy first page. S***s dope if anyone ever wants to get into it. Most gyms give a free class so there no negative to just trying it out.

Yea same reasons for me, I might consider some smoker/amateur fights down the line though, just to be able to say I did it.

My main problem right now is just keeping up with the cardio demands, especially for Muay Thai. After a full class of drills we usually do a few rounds of sparring, by the last few rounds I can barely even keep my hands up.

Yea s***s tough at first, I was gassed for the first few weeks when I started now I'm literally going from Thai practice/rounds right into BJJ and rolling. Since the classes are back to back. S*** cooks you lol.
A couple times I did the Morning Thai class, came back at night for BJJ and then went straight into hard sparring and I swear I thought I was gonna die lol.
It's literally just keeping at it though the cardio comes eventually. It's wild how fast you lose that cardio if you don't show up for a little though.

Amateur wrestling isn't very big in my country, but there's a gym nearby that has a large muslim population, I don't know how they go without eating all day for Ramadan yet still train so hard at night, props to them and whoever else is going through it atm

Damn that’s a brutal day. Staying consistent with that routine will get you in great shape quick though.

I kind of want to give some Karate system a try. I'm fascinated by Kyoji Horiguchi's and Robert Whittaker's styles of blitzing in and circling out quickly but I imagine even they don't practice karate at all anymore and rather they just adapted the footwork into their boxing/kickboxing/mma training. I'm not trying to do kata either

You gotta stretch OD now if you want that style. that style is really tricky to develop
It's weird, it's almost as if you have to do karate as a kid to develop it because mcgregor is the only guy off the top off my head that really developed that style as an adult
If you do want to develop that style you gotta do a lot of hopping to burn out your calves and stretching. I wish I stretched earlier cause it would would way easier now lol. I started way too late with that style.
