Chalamet walks such an impressive tightrope between making this guy an unredeemable little s*** but oddly likeable in his brazenness

I know chalamet is a huge Kanye fan and I suspect some of that factored into his performance

I love how this movie is 2% ping pong and 98% sociopathic hijinks to make money in order to play ping pong

Probably the best movie of the year. Much better than Uncut Gems or Good Times. Just a classic screwball comedy driven by grindset immorality. Great role for Timmy. Impeccable casting down the line. Jack Fisk seamless production design. Great score.

I had just read Budd Schulberg's What Makes Sammy Run? which is highly relevant in regard to second and third generation immigrant Jews in America assimilating. The titular Sammy is very much a Marty figure. I wouldn't be surprised if they've read it. An essential Hollywood text written by the son of a studio head.

A lot of silly discourse around this one however. People were presenting the "actually Marty is bad" thing like it wasn't the text of the movie. And I don't think you're supposed to root for Japanese Nationalism either. Endo is just a guy who is good at ping pong.

I think it might be better than Uncut Gems too. And to think he did it in almost half the time

One trick I noticed they used so Marty wasn’t 100% unlikable by the audience— a lot of times when he would do something rude, like yelling at his mom for drinking in his room when HE was the one who left the glass of OJ in there, he’d then turn around immediately and do something nice, like giving her the Egyptian pyramid rock as a present.

He’s like a bi polar sour patch kid

Also his Mum didn’t get his dream at all (it seemed), that felt very demeaning to him

I travelled 60+60 km to watch this like 3 weeks ago and it was worth the trip and then some.
    I'll rewatch this weekend.
Honestly my favorite movie this decade. Probably not the best but I haven't been this giddy while watching a movie in ages.

  • still need the jacket

  • Josh Safdie the type to cast people off the street for a space movie

  • I loved when Marty went back in the Army carrier with all the troops. Feel like there’s probably a few out takes with dialogue there or I’d like there to be

  • just rewatched this again. man, one of those decade defining film that will be talked for a very very long time. 2025 had a lot of movies that fitted this description tho.

  • I know this one didn't hit like that for me cause I'm not pressed to rewatch and keep up with the discussion, like with Sinners and One Battle After Another. Patiently waiting for it to hit HBO Max Very much could change my mind on a second watch.
