Movie is still a little slow for me in the middle. But Timmy’s performance was even stronger the second go round
Which part?
I think I thought it would be more of a sports movie than a character study. Safdies at their best are clearly now just us watching a character move through a situation rather than a real plot or narrative. Not that i dislike it — but this was straight up an acting vehicle for him.
Ahhh I see. Yeah alot of their interviews they talk about not caring about plot.
Uncut gems at one point was gonna be a tv series because the draft they had was an ensemble of different jewelers and was just all over the place. I think Ronald was like “no we need to trim this s*** down and add some type of narrative to it”
Josh was scared them doing that would sacrifice character nuance and s***
Watched this for the first time a couple weeks ago bc my friend who’s a critic got an early screener. I had a blast although we got so drunk I missed a few details and put it behind Good Time abd Uncut Gems. Just had my second watch tn in the theater and I was a bit less drunk this time so I picked up on so many more themes and details. This is a classic full stop. I’ve never been a massive Timmy fan but all that s*** he was talking for this movie was 100% deserved. He really leveled up in this. The score is f***ing masterful the writing is sharp. I love how 3% of the movie is ping pong and 97% of the movie is Marty desperately for a chance to make barely enough money to play ping pong

And Josh said they spend a lot of time writing character backstory, even for the characters who only have one line. Usually when writers devote a lot of time to just character work, a lot of the plot stuff isn’t focused on as much and vise versa.
And these niggas is heavily inspired by Cassavetes, Altman and PTA

Speaking to the 3% 97% a film I haven’t seen much comparison to is The Fighter. In the sense that it’s not really a boxing boxing movie but rather the s*** that goes on behind the scenes.
3 stars is correct and generous
B**** you better be talking about these 3 stars

I definitely still have to check that one out never scene it. Love Christian Bale

Still can’t get over what that ball morphed from
Prior to the movie I had forever young stuck in my head so it was glorious when that s*** played
Still can’t get over what that ball morphed from
The way it feeds into the emotion at the end of the movie
Do movies usually perform so well Christmas weekend?
It’s crazy my theater was completely packed 10 pm Christmas night

So the entire timeline of the movie was 9 months with the 2nd half of the movie being a month?
So the entire timeline of the movie was 9 months with the 2nd half of the movie being a month?
Yeah seems like that middle part where he’s traveling all over the world|| covers several months and then ||when he finds out she’s pregnant everything after that takes place in about a month
This the type of move that makes you think “yeah I look goood” and wanna hop on tinder and start telling girls that you’re about to win the international ping pong championship

I feel like if a storyline had to be cut, it would be the dog.

Love it. They built a world rather than a film, which is awesome. I don’t mind. Narratively it suffers a hair, but the s*** is a thrilling ride nonetheless.

Damn I loved that s*** lol

Parts of it def but that’s where I get a little of the drag. Going back to the crib a second time was a little tiring.
But again— very minor gripe.
This movie is long asf but it felt like 90 minutes. I don’t think anything should’ve been cut tbh

What do you think stops it from being a straight forward narrative? Is it cus it’s not “go to the tournament, go home, get money, train, go to the next tournament” but rather it dives into all the different sub plots and kinda seems like it gets lost at times?
Like some might think “what does this dog s*** gotta do with ping pong”?
